Witchcraft is a way of practicing magick, in the form of symbolism to affect the mind and energies to accomplish a goal or change. The basic principle of witchcraft is what is refered to as like causes like, symbols, herbs, stones and other items that correspond to that particular energy current cause an affect on the subconscious mind, and on the energies we send out. There are many books and websites out there about witchcraft, but read them with a bit of discretion, they are written by people, and sometimes people are misinformed or make mistakes, and sometimes people just make up things to make their books or websites look cool. Compare them to other stuff you have read, keep notes, and if you ever have a question about something there is always this forum.

Now, mind you Wicca and witchcraft are not exactly the same thing. Wicca is specificly a reliion, and not all witches are Wiccan, and not all Wiccans practice witchcraft. Just thought I would clarify that.

For developing psychic abilities, I would recommend "How to Develope Your Psychic Abilities" by Eileen Connolly. Its a great book with interesting exercises to help you. Spiral Dance is also a decent book on witchcraft, though it is primarily Wiccan based, it also has great exercised for meditation, visualization, and energy work. For any form of spell work, I suggest reading "Spells and How They Work" by Janet and Stuart Farrar, and "How to Write Your Own Magick" by Richard Webster.

I also agree with prariecrow about Silver Ravenwolf, her material is shotty at best. Most of her material is historically inaccurate, she has lied to her readers about a great many things including her background, and she has mostly written material that looks fancy to get misguided teens to buy her book. I happen to know her personally, and her teachers, and I can say I disagree with a lot of things she has done.

I hope this has been some help, aside from what other people have said as well. There have been some good websites and other answers posted by other people too.

Hey, if you live in Chicago, there are lots of groups here to get involved with. Obviously, you realize that Witchcraft is more than just casting spells, it's a religion.

Check out these links. BTW I live in Chicago too. I have a very small coven here. I live in Logan Square.

Here's a list of upcoming event in Chicago. Best way to learn is to network. Also, you might find my videos informative.

You might find the Witches of the World section at Witchvox helpful:

http://www.witchvox.com/xvn.html

Just use the pull-down menus on the left to find individuals, groups, shops, and events in your area.

However, because you are only 17, it's unlikely you'll find a teacher willing to take you on, for legal reasons.

I can only speak for Wicca (one of the religions in which witchcraft is practiced), but if you're looking to do some reading I'd recommend "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" by Scott Cunningham, and "The Triumph of the Moon" by Ronald Hutton. I advise you to stay away from anything by Silver Ravenwolf, for reasons outlined in the following essay:

If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me.

The path of the impeccable warrior is the true path of the witch. She steps into a reality of her own and must take her own responsibility for the good or bad that comes to her. Of that if you seek you will find.

www.witchvox.com may be a useful resource for you.

Also, for ideas on activities for the pagan holidays, read here:

Remember, spells are primarily for the caster, to aid you in your spiritual journey. They are for harmonizing with the energy around you and invoking the energy you want in your life.

Trust me, it will not bring you that happiness and joy that you crave.
Only Jesus Christ can satisfy you.
Don't get into Witchcraft, it will do you more harm than good.

Take care
