Limewire is slow because it is a Java program. Java programs, being cross-platform (capable of running on many different processors and operating systems), are run inside what is called a "Java Virtual Machine". This machine gives fairly consistent performance across all platforms: slow.

Here's the science-fictiony, paranoid answer:

Some websites are rich in spyware (not mentioning any specific names here) not the commercial kind of spyware, the federal, state investigative kinds. The code written to track P2P music/movie downloaders is very disruptive and cumbersome. It's a kind of P2P network in itself that uses your computer to bounce your own info back to them like it's become their own private broadcasting station.

* Bidirectional traffic slows down your PC.
* Constant pinging affects speed.
* Viruses can drench it in virtual molasses
* Downloads slow it down.
* Using your computer on a P2P network makes it slowmo.
* Fighting popups--has a s l o w i n g e f f e c t.*

Limewire, Winamp are free, right. When was the last time you got something free? Free on the internet, means Free to do stuff on your computer.

because it usually fills your computer with viruses, trojans, and worms, spyware, adware, etc. etc. etc.

I learned this the hard way.

I bought my daughter a brand new PC. It ran great for the first few days. She downloaded Limewire one morning and by that night her computer slowed down. I ran a virus scan and she already had 43 infections in less than 12 hours after Limewore was installed.

I've seen this happen more than once.

Investigate the numerous settings tabs in Limewire preferences. There's one in there that affects RAM. Can't recall the name.

p.s. Others are correct about Limewire--it's not worth the spyware and other hassles it brings. In fact the songs you download themselves could be dangerous. Try Gnucleus instead.

And also, Lavasoft Ad-aware is not really that recommended anymore to use as a spyware catcher. Try Spycatcher Express!

* Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue!
* After opening LW wait 10 to 20 mins before using. Let it settle down 1st.
* Go to Tools>Options>Speed & tick disable Ultrapeer Cap. & press apply button.
* Set both uplds & downlds to autoclear.
* Close all LW windows you don't need open at that time.
* You might also consider reducing shared files if you have multiple thousands of them.
* Also don't use the Resume/Find Sources button on all incomplete files. This can have side-fx such as affect LW's connection quality. This will also stress LW & your comp. If you use Resume/Find sources then just apply it to a couple or so at one time.
* Reduce uplds to about 70-80% or more. Reduce downlds to 80 or 90%.
* Disable LW's media player so your default player opens instead (Tools>Options>Player & untick option & press Apply.)
* If you're not actually actively using LW then hide it in the background or in the program tray (minimized.)

Limewire installs all kinds of ad programs, spyware, tracking programs, etc. onto your computer.
Download AdAware--it's free. It's made by a company called Lavasoft. You can run scans on your computer and delete all the spyware and the other garbage that slows down your computer.
