i recently transitioned from breast to formula with my 2 week old *things werent working out* and he got very constipated due to the change in milk. his pediatrician recommended karo syrup *just a little in his formula*,i used this method also for my son 2 yrs ago...im just wondering how long will i have to use the karo for his constipation before he poops normal on his own? will his poo get better on its own without having to give him the syrup constantly for him to go? anyone else dealt with my situation *transition from breast to formula with constipation issues?

I had the same problem with 2 of my children, karo works so well. The light karo syrup doesn't work as well as the dark karo syrup. Just put a little in a couple of bottles a day and it will work. My oldest daughter took only a day or so, but my youngest daughter took almost a week. Stay with your doctor's advice and be patient. It will work, don't listen to people when they say it will hurt the baby. You can't go on everything everyone tells you, listen to your doctor.

I had an awful time switching my second from the breast to formula. The Karo worked wonders. What I did was give the Karo for a couple of weeks and then discontinue. If I noticed that she became constipated again I'd just try one bottle of it. It may take some patience but your baby will soon get it figured out in its system. Good luck-mine hated formula so the switch was awful.

NO, NO, NO!! NEVER give an infant Karo syrup. According to a lot of doctors, and a recent article in Parent's Magazine, this is just as dangerous as giving a baby honey. It can cause botulism! Give Pedialyte instead, never prune juice, until at least 6 months of age.

NOOOO!!! Most newborns get constipated with a milk change. Let his body work it out. If it goes on for more than 2 days, take him in to the doc.
