Good question, Kataline:
As you note, Saints are canonized and many judge themselves worthy to enter the Kingdom. All the disciples said they would never forsake the Lord. But before the night was over, they all ran for their lives.
The book of Revelation defines a Saint: Revelation 14:12 "Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus."
There you have it, Katalina. If through the grace of God, you keep His commandments, like Jesus did, and that is through the abiding faith of Jesus, God calls you a saint.
Please note, It is the FAITH OF JESUS that constrains you to keep God's law: "Christ in you, the hope of glory" is the mechanism of your salvation.
More on this in a Bible code in an on-line publication. Chapter three deals heavily with how one is saved or lost. Select: http://abiblecode.tripod.com

The word is used several ways. First, the members of God's Church on earth are often referred to as "the saints". Second, all persons who have been saved and have passed on to their heavenly reward are "the heavenly saints". The interaction and relationship between the earthly saints and the heavenly saints is what is referred to in the Apostles' Creed as "the communion of saints". And thirdly, those heavenly saints who have been canonized, that is, added to the Church's official list of great Christians who are now heavenly saints, are also referred to as "the saints". Note that it is not canonization that "made them" saints. It is being saved by the grace of God that made them saints. Canonization is simply an official recognition of their sainthood.

I've been called a Saint a lot in my life especially by elderly people, I believe it's because I put others before myself.

My atheist step-mother, who is now deceased, was a saint. Nobody had even one bad word to say about her either during her life, or after her death. She had a smile that could put the whole world at ease. She gave without wanting anything in return and never judged or put anyone down. To me, that's a saint.
