Colt 45: Religion was created by mere humans to manipulate other humans by. It is "normal" for the powers to be, to attempt to control others. This is why religion is found throughout the world. Christianity - on the other hand, is unique since it revolves around faith, grace and Jesus Christ. Christianity is about relationship - not "legalism" (dos & don'ts) as religion preaches. Religion is about what you do to be accepted by signifigant others; whereas, Christianity is who you ARE because God loves you. Bottom -line: "religion" is man - made; whereas, "Christianity" is of God.

* In ancient times, myths were created to explain scientific phenomena such as lightning, rain, fire, and the creation of the earth. These ancient tales evolved over time into religion as people evolved mentally and spiritually.
* It gives us comfort to have an afterlife to believe in.
* Birds of a feather flock together. Christians at church, for example - Wiccans in covens, or Buddhists in temples all get together for their religion. (However some people don't) but the ones who do enjoy the sense of community from it.
* Different religions preach different morals for people to live by. The Bible preaches all kinds of different morals from its numerous stories and verses. Sikhism, a Japanese religion that is the fifth largest in the world, focuses on salvation. Wicca is about respecting nature and living your life to help out others instead of trying to harm them. Buddhists strive to practice compassion and inner peace. And so on...
* Parents use religion to teach kids what's right and wrong. For example, they learn discipline, self restraint, politeness, compassion, etc.
* Oh yeah, not to mention that religion is used to scare the crap out of people. I am 13 and the whole Hell thing still kinda scares me. :(
* Another reason religion was created was to bring together people of similar beliefs.
* Every religion has its own rituals...holidays, prayers, etc that people enjoy doing because it's fun.
* Back to ancient times...folks back then prayed to ancient gods for things like rain or fertility. Without a religion to base their prayers on they may as well have been praying to a rock or something.

Religion is man's answer to 'why does stuff happen?' Spirits make the rain, the crops grow, the sounds that go bump in the night, etc. It explained things and made humans feel safe. As humanity become more developed, our spiritual belief's developed and became more complex/structured. I'm not entirely sure how it developed into 'what you believe is wrong, die!', but that's where we are now.

Because we lacked any scientific knowledge from ANY discipline. We needed doctors even though we didn't know crap about medicine. There was still mental illness even though we didn't understand psychology. We looked at the stars in wonder even though astronomy was unknown to us.
We had just recently became literate. It was the recording of oral traditions passed down from before writing. It was a way to pass along survival and sociological information from generation to generation.

Religion was created to control the human race and to profit from it. That's what the church is all about.

"To explain things that couldn't be explained before that are explained through science now"
Not all things can be explained through science - in fact very few things of spiritual nature can be. The trouble with many small minded people today is that they think if science cannot explain it, it must not be worth thinking about.

Uh... because even if people think the main topic was not, religion itself is man made.

Many many people need the comfort that it provides. Especially when people feel powerless in life. It's a support system for most.
