Be very careful with your dosages -- valerian can be toxic, if I recall correctly.
Here is a link that contains information on how to brew valerian tea (scroll down):

Did you buy dried valerian root, or fresh?

First, Cat and rats both love the smell.
The water extract of valerian is effective. I believe fresh root tea to be the most effective way to ingest Valerian. But, there are constituents that boil away at relatively low temperatures. If you boil the valerian root, as you generally do with roots, than you loose much of the effect but leave most of the smell. Making it as a "Sun Tea" is effective.
You can also grind the fresh root in a blender, cover it with water to form a mush, let sit a day, squeeze it through some muslin cloth--- musky earthy tea fit for the heartiest of taste buds. But a small cup will impart a strong sensation throughout the body.
Remember small Cup.......it's not a soft drink.

I'm an atheist, but have read the research on Valerian Root...
It works on the same neurotransmitters as prescription benzodiazapines (Xanax, Ativan, Valium, etc.).
It smells like crapola even when commercially prepared, but will, indeed, help you with reducing anxiety and will assist in sleep.

It does majorly stink! I take it in capsule form. I take the suggested amount (my bottle says 3) about 45 minutes before I go to bed. It does seem to help.

Sister Mary is right but I like most prefer to buy it in capsule form and forget the taste and smell. (if I'm using it medically)
I don't use it for headache...for that I take "feverfew". I get bad migraines.

I'm Christian, but I can answer your question. We get valerian root in capsule form. Pre-measured, easy to swallow, and tasteless. Works wonders.

It's ingested... but you need to prepare it first. Might be easier (and less smelly!) to simply purchase prepared Valerian next time around. :)

Hi Ariel. It is best used as a tea. Brew it and let it steep for five minutes and drink it.
Hope you feel better dear.
