I will answer you from the bible. Jesus said that men will not come to the light (and He is described in the bible as being the light), because their deeds are evil. People refuse to believe in God because they do not wish to live as God wants us to.
No person can convince another that God exists, that they are a sinner in need of a savior. Only God can transform a heart. But prayer is very very powerful. We can pray for those with hardened hearts, that God will have mercy on them, and reveal to them who His son is.

Most atheists I believe refuse to believe in God because they do not want to face up to the truth of the wicked way in which they live their own life. Most of them, probably would not listen to you whatever you tried to tell them concerning God Almighty. But one day they will find out that they have been completely wrong. And they will greatly regret their refusing to believe in Jesus Christ. Just about the only thing that a true Christian can do, concerning an atheist, is to pray for them continually. Never forget that with God, nothing shall ever be impossible. And many times it takes things which seems to be impossible to us, for God to get the attention of an atheist. But do not ever think that He cannot find a way to do so.

Brian: The most obvious answer to your question "what would it take to get them to believe" is simple. GOD !!! When God decides to do this is entirely up to Him (see: John chapter 6, verse 44) . God, the Father, does the drawing to Himself. This is why it is the Work of Jesus Christ - not people. Trying to convert others is not a mandate of the Bible. Proclamation of the Gospel is not attempting to convert others. I was once a staunch Atheist - now, a Christian. God is a miracle worker and nothing is too difficult for Him. Each person will have his or her "kick at the can" when God determines it ! Let go and let God is my advice to you !

I believe that most atheists are closer to believing than not. It is quite evident on these forums. Why would they be "fishing" the "religion" forums it they were not looking for some answers? The atheists are all over these forums. If they truely didn't believe in anything why would they waste their time in a religion forum? Is it try to "convert" people to their ways? No. Sure, they like to make fun of people here, but I feel sorry for them, because they can not even practice what they preach (by going into a religion forum). If they were truely atheist, why come here? lol
As for "converting" them, seeds are being planted in them. Let God cultivate those seeds.

some Atheist don't believe i think because they have never gotten to the point where they have been able to break down & allow theire last result to be God, it could have been the way that they have been raised so they think it's right. Some have just never tried hard enough. Some could have been impatient, got on thiere knees & prayed waited on theire own & not for God, didn't get what they want & gave up. i agree with the man above..we need to do less preaching and more
prayer.

If someone doesn't want to believe, they will not, even if Jesus himself, appeared before them...some are so convinced they have it all figured out, that no amount of talking would change their minds. They are so educated in Science and beleive only in the physical things of this world, they are totally spiritually dead. Sometimes a break through is made and they get it,,,but most are so puffed up with pride about how educated and smart they are and how dumb we poor Christians are, they can't understand. We are mind, body and spirit...the first two, they get,,,the third and the most important,,they ignore...I feel sorry for them, but there is nothing we can do if they won't listen...I have members of my own family, who walk away.

God told us in His word that the fool has said in his heart there is no God. Satan has been playing some really great cards to be able to deceive so many but I know that one day Every knee shall bow and EVERY tongue WILL confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. That's when they'll believe. I am just sooooo thankful that I am able to do it on this side because I choose to and not just on the other side after I've realized that I was wrong my entire life.

I believe that some Atheists are truly terrified of the idea of God. They like to think they are in complete control of their lives and that they don't need anyone's help; particularly from an entity they can't see or hear.
Also, some Christians have suffered enormously, as we all do, and begin to think that if God truly believed, horrible things wouldn't happen to them. As we know from reading the Bible, terrible things happen to believers all of the time. I know a girl from grad school who was a Christian but her brother was killed in a fire. She turned her back on Christ in anger. I think that these people in particular need to be talked to about the many Christians that have suffered; look at the prophets! They suffered enormously, but the promise of eternal life is stronger than anything that can happen to us on Earth.

They have to have a sincere desire to consider other views. They have to be open to hearing with an open mind and heart the views of others that are believers.
I have always believed that if we just live our lives and love others, that maybe they will see something by example that might spark an interest.
I do not believe in hounding someone that is not interested, because that is abusive. There is a parable that states do not cast your pearls before swine. That does not mean that atheist are swine, but it does mean do not harp on those that have closed minds.

For some there is absolutely nothing that we can do to help them see truth. Even as Christ performed miracles in front of the eyes of all, some would not believe. No sight and harden hearts... do you ever feel you read posts from people who fit this characteristic?
