Basically some Ford Focus' run a filter that is sealed shut and runs the same filter material used in the powerstroke diesel and is supposed to be able to hold about 3 pounds of dirt before replacement.
There is a gauge on the side of the air cleaner.. once it hits the red, then you are to replace it.. It won't need replacement before that (It's called a restriction gauge and is more accurate measurement that a time frame in filter replacement)
For those who don't know, 2.3 models since 2003 and 2.0s since 2005 run a sealed airbox. It's not to be be opened.. non serviceable as it's called in the manual.
But Ford recommends replacement at 150k miles if the minder hasn't gone in the red yet.. It's supposed to be a lifetime filter.

Keep in mind that if the bolts are stripped then they are probably not holding the lid to the airbox closed tightly and it could be letting unfiltered air into the motor. I would check salvage yards or ebay for a complete used airbox. You should be able to find one a lot cheaper then $400. Get it installed with a new filter ASAP. The longer you go like that the more risk you are taking of damaging your engine. BTW I would not return to any of the mechanics who told you you didn't need to change the air filter for 100,000 miles.

If the bolts are striped then just take the whole air box out and change it, it will be cheaper for a new one then to mess around trying to open the old one and well your at it just buy an aftermarket cold air intake, it will probably cost you less then a new Ford air box and it will give your car a little more zip! Good luck!

That sounds wrong to me man - typically, you want to replace the air filter every 10,000 miles. If the bolts are stripped, how will they open it when it gets to 100,000? You may have to pay to get it open now, but you will save yourself that money in gas over the next 100,000 miles. Although a clean air/gas ration effects overall engine performance, that will be the most remarkable difference you will notice - the gas mileage.

there isn't any air filter in the world that doesn't need to be changed for 100,000 miles. if the bolts are stripped you will need to take the whole filter box out and get an easy out or a bolt extractor set, or something like that to get the old bolts out.

although the quicky lube type places want you to believe you need a new air filter every 3000 miles, they last longer than that, but definately not forever! check your owners manual. it will have good info as to how often it should be replaced. keep in mind that if you travel on dusty roads alot, you will need to replace it more often. on your car i would say every 25k or so under normal conditions would be sufficient.
