Nothing wrong with it if you load the same XP Operating System that the Key goes to. Just remember, you can only use it on one pc so if you load it to the new one you will have to load some other OS onto the old pc if you want to continue using it. Something like Linux.

It's generally legal if you're only using on one PC--i.e., if you removed it from the Compaq. Check the End User License Agreement (EULA), though. If the software was pre-loaded on your Compaq, the EULA may bar use on another PC.
Further, the key may not work on another PC if it was pre-loaded on the Compaq. Often such software is OEM-limited, and unless your bios and motherboard are telling the program that they match your compaq, the software CD that came with the Compaq won't load to the new PC, and the key won't work with non-OEM software.

1. I've done it with older versions of Windows. I suppose that it is possible with XP as well, though I've never tried it.
2. Yes, it is legal, as long as you do not maintain a working copy on the Compaq as well.

As long as you have uninstalled it from the old crappy machine. If you have one license it can only be used on one machine ata time...If you cant get the updates then phone microsoft to get a new key. Tell them it was a repair job. Not an upgrade or a new machine>

Sometime it will work but watch out for that windows authenticy code
The compaq code is for a compaq computor and hardware.
It probably isn't legal , they want you to buy a new op system.

Yes and yes. A copy of Windows XP may be installed on different computers as long as it is ONLY installed on ONE computer at a time.
