First look for a solid graphite rod 10-12ft in length. Pay close attention to the tip strength, because you want a rod that can take some serious whipping action. By the time you hook up a couple of nice chunks of bait and a surf weight heavy enough to hold everything down in one place without the surf current dragging your bait off, it becomes allot of work on that rod tip. I average at least 125yds a throw, and more when I need to. My 12ft Calcutta rod is strong enough to withstand these cast, but sensitive enough to feel the fish biting(hang a bell on the rod tip for nighttime fishing). For the reel I prefer baitcast because I can cast a baitcast allot further then a spin-cast. I use an Ambassadeur 7000C3. The C3 means it has 3 stainless steel bearings, great for saltwater. Make sure the reel you find holds plenty of line with a level wind included. Some big salt water reels can't take the punishment of casting out like this. The spools are hauling @$$ when you cast out and I have personally seen more than one Penn warp it's spool from the heat of casting. Feel free to email and ask me more if you need.

I love Pflueger reels! I think they are very well made and fairly inexpensive, a good way for budget anglers to step up to the big time! I also go with Daiwa, Quantum, and Abu Garcia reels. As far as rods go I like Ugly Stiks as an "everyday, everyone can afford" rod. For my more technique specific better quality rods, I like Falcon, Fenwick, St. Croix, All Star, Shimano and Daiwa for their quality, toughness, and dependability. Much success to you!

Fishing is cruel. They're swimming around, minding their own fish business, not bothering anyone and you want to go stick a hook in their face and kill them. Does that make you feel tough? Leave them alone.
