In this particular case a Lee Enfield in .303 to 30.06?

I want a bolt-action that can shoot as fast as the enfield but in a more common cartridge since .303 is expensive and getting harder to find

Duh!

Just get an Enfield Model 2A in .308!

(actually, 7.62x51 NATO but you can use .308 in it as it meets higher pressure requirements).

This is a later model of the No 1 made in India and they are pretty high quality. You will need to clean off the cosmoline and maybe refinish the metal, but you can have this done professionally and still be at $450. Add a custome drop in trigger and you are still at $500 or so.

EDIT: You can find lots of these Enfield 2As on www.auctionarms.com

ALSO: Enfields were cheap in the US in the 1950s and 1960s and many, many hunters had custom rifles built on these fine actions, usually in American hunting calibners like .30-06 and .308. I know of two of these "Sporters" for sale at gun and pawn shops in my city right now. You see, the original hunters have passed on and their heirs just sell off the hardware. Look around!!!!
(I just found a couple on line....!!)

It would not be practical nor cheap. You'd have to have the action re-barrelled to a similar length cartridge as the .303 British round. The .303 British is 2.2" long and it is a rimmed cartridge. The .30-06 is 2.94" long and it is rimless so the 'convertion' won't be easy. Also, the .30-06 is probably too 'intense' for the older Lee Enfield action. So you're better off keeping or trading your Enfield and purchase a new rifle in the desired caliber.

Best.

Sportman Guide has bulk surplus 303 ammo in a recent catalog.. i've got it at home can't remember price, I am thinking about $100/500. They have Sellor and Belloit for about $12/20 rounds.

Otherwise as JD said, if you want to change caliber, buy a different gun. The Civilian Marksmanship program has 1903s, or get a decent tack driver like a Remington DL, Savage, in bolt.

Sorry, But thats just not practical, and even if it could be done it would cost 10-20 times what the gun is worth. If you are talking a military rifle that is an original that is. If it's a customized/sporterized Lee Enfield than it could be re-barreled to 30-06 but again it would be expensive.

As said before, trade it in for what you can get for a more popular rifle in a caliber you like. Or sell it outright.

Harry,

I don't think you can convert a Lee-Enfield into a .30-'06.

Why don't you just buy one of the Ishapore Arsenal reworked rifles that have been converted to .308 Win? It would be lots cheaper than having a gunsmith convert your rifle.

I admit I don't know much about guns, but wouldn't that involve re-boring the barrel? That's a pretty big job, isn't it? A few hundred dollars maybe?

I think that would be taking a $500.00 gun adding $500.00 worth of work and ending up with a $200.00 gun(that won't be safe to shoot)

It can probably be done but it's not a practical thing to accomplish. Try to exchange it at a gun shop.
