1. It's fine. Security-wise, it's probably their best version yet (which isn't saying much). I couldn't care less about the pretty graphics. I always use Classic Mode.
2. Some things are moved around a bit, so it may take a while to locate something. Within a week, you will get the hang of it.
3. The CD costs between $199 and $399, depending on the version you want.
4. Vista, like previous versions of Windows, has the ability to upgrade from a previous version. Vista can only upgrade from Service Pack 2 of XP, though. You can keep all of your files, though it is still best to back up your files (just in case...).

In my opinion, I would not remmomend getting Windows Vista. It is just a glorified version of XP. It depends on what version of Vista you get. You could get the basic version which is around $200.00 dollars. You could get premium which is even more. Windows XP has a lot of bugs. They will say that there isn't that many, only to persuade you into buying it. I would stick with XP until the first service pack for Vista comes out. If you do insist on installing Vista, all you would have to choose is to upgrade and not partition your drive, that way you will not lose all of your settings, documents, files, and etc.
Hope that helped.

Vista costs around $250, but different versions cost differently.
It's easy to switch to vista if you simply upgrade from vista to xp. No you will not lose your data if you upgrade, you will if you format and start from scratch.
when you buy vista, put the cd in the drive after windows loads up, and click upgrade.
simple really.

I've heard that Vista isn't all that great and not worth the hassle. Sorry.
