He was a crook, and used to listening to Satan.
Actually, I really think he thought Jesus would just walk out of their trap and he would be 30 silver pieces richer.
When he realized Jesus was not going to escape, he regretted his actions, tried to return the money, and went out and hanged himself.

It was prophesied that Jesus would be betrayed for 30 silver pieces, which is exactly what happened. Judas was actually the "treasurer" of the disciples. He kept what little money they had and he became greedy. He never apologized, but realized afterward the gravity of what he had done and killed himself. He will not receive a resurrection. He is gone forever!

"Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. When they heard it they were greatly pleased, and promised to give him money. So he began to look for an opportunity to betray him." (Mark, 14:}
It is believed by most Christian Church's, that Judas was a loyal disciple because he believed that one day Jesus would rule the earthly Jewish empire and bring fame and fortune to those who had supported, followed, and "believed" in him. So, when Jesus' plan ( or what Judas believed was Jesus' plan) began to go awry, it is indicated that Judas chose to hand his master over to the authorities in order to salvage his own reputation and to earn thirty pieces of silver. Thus, Judas Iscariot has been notoriously identified as the personification of evil, greed, mistrust, and betrayal.
As others have already said, he hanged himself. God used him in his plan. There are some that think Judas should be forgiven since he was part of God's plan but I think God already knew the beginning and end of Judas. God knew what he would do before he did it. He didn't make Judas do it,,,but he knew he would.

Will any one ever really know?
There are many schools of thought on the matter. One (not mine) is that he and others did not really understand or want to understand his message and true purpose. They thought that he was going to be an earthly instead of spiritual liberator. Some even thought that if they could put him in grave danger, then the God of Abraham would intervene and save him and throw off the yoke of the Romans. After all, he tried to return the money. Is it possible that his actions did not have the intended consequences?

...the "powers that be", meaning the government of the time, sought to destroy Jesus...in the mean time, Judas was having trouble understanding why Jesus wasn't saving the Jews from Roman rule and dictatorship...in reality, Jesus was sent for both Jews and Gentiles and to save the world from sin, not just the Jews from oppression of Roman rule...so Judas convinced himself it was OK to set a trap for Jesus capture and was paid for his betrayal...later, after Christ was tortured and crucified, Judas realized what he had done and hanged himself

Get it straight, Judas was the only normal disciple of the lot. The others hated him because he sat next to Jesus (that was his place, and MM on the other side, and they hated her too). This trio did not believe in miracles, resurrections, the law, Yahweh, or any such nonsense as presented in the Roman bible full of Roman mythos.
