My Girlfriend's ex-boyfriend has her dog. She has been trying to get the dog back since they had broke up. (about 2 years they've been broken up) She has the registration from the store for the dog in her name but he isn't registered with the county and the GPS for the dog is registered under her name. The only thing that is under her ex's name is the vet. She went to his house to try to get the dog and even offered up to $1000 for the dog back. He declined. My gf bought the dog as a puppy and we could even track the statements to prove it. He didn't even want her to see the dog and if it wasn't for his (now) wife to be there my girlfriend wouldn't even of got to pet the dog. Once she did pet the dog though she started to cry which made me feel bad for her, which brought me to writing this forum. Is there any cheap way of getting the dog back legally? Well Thank You for reading and I hope for a response!

Take him to small claims court. If everything is in her name it shouldn't be a problem getting him back.

Dogs are considered property. If your girlfriend can prove that she payed for and bought the dog, then she can sue for the dog back. Just go to small claims court and sue for possesion of the dog. Thats inexpensive too, you'll probably just have to pay a court filing fee and thats it.

If she's the owner, if she has the original bill of sale, if she's got proof of ownership then a visit to the police to ask them for help in return of stolen property is what should be done. She shouldn't have waited two years, it makes for less of a case, but the police are the way to go--she needs to bring the proof with her, then talk with them and file a report.

Call the police or threaten him. Since she has proof, it should be simple.
