It really does depend on the distance of the flight and how strong the winds are that day.

For example, on a short 20 minute flight, we will cruise at only 10000 feet. When we are flying for 20-40 minutes we will go somewhere around the mid-20's. For flights longer than that, we strive to get into the 30's as that is where we can normally get the best fuel consumption. This will depend on the atmospheric conditions such as wind and temperature. If there is a strong headwind, then we will choose a different altitude to try and compensate for the wind speed.

It really depends on the flight plan and the distance between the two cities. I flew to China from San Francisco a few months ago and we we at about 35,000 feet (if I remember correctly.) A quick google search might also answer this for ya. :)
