On crutchfield it says my speaker size is 6x8 but i look at my speakers covers and they are round, and they also say that a 5.25 speaker will fit in there how should i go about this.

I have a 01 mercury sable LS sedan.

If you have 6 x 8 speakers now and they fit then why don't you just replace them with the same?

Ford and Mercury typically use a 6X8 speaker the 5.25 is not used very often. Just because the cover is round is not very telling. I have owned a Mitsubishi that had oval covers and the speakers were 6.5 in fact the speaker was bigger than the cover. For your car you will most likely have to remove the door panel to get to the speaker. The only Sable listed to have the 5.25 was back in 95.
The best thing to do is pull the door panel off. You are going to have to do it to replace them anyways. And I would also go to auto-zone and buy the speaker harnesses they sell them as a pair so you do not have to mess with wondering which is your positive and negative polarity, it makes the world a whole lot easier.
It should be the 6X8 thou.

Good luck hope this helps!

The size of the outside grill frequently has nothing to do with the size of the speaker underneath.

A Mercury Sable definitely has 6x8" speakers, both front and back.

Adapter plates are available that will allow 5.25 or 6.5" speakers to fit. The advantage to this is that there are many more 5.25 and 6.5" speakers to choose from than 6x8" or 5x7" speakers.

You can't install a 5.25" or 6.5" speaker in that car without an adapter plate (although you can build your own adapter plate, if you want).

front and back speakers are 6x8 stock...

you would want 6x8 speakers all around.

the other sizes listed will fit in the larger cutouts, which gives you some variety.

I would stick with the 6x8 size for the rear and door speakers.

the covers are just that shape for design purposes.

lots of choices!

good luck.
