get an application like acronis true image and keep a full backup image of ur system ... then u can feel safer to get radical ..

Virtual Machine. It runs as its own computer within your computer. If the software messes up then you just don't save the VM. Reload the original and try again.

I agree with the previous posters. Also, make sure your test computer isn't connected to any network (especially the internet) or you could be breaking the law if you release a virus "into the wild."

Suggestion
Depending on the op system
If you have some spare drives
Do a disk to disk transfer to a 2nd drive - easy on unix, linix, win98
maybe not so easy on later ms since those versions are tied to the hardware
fiddle to your hearts content on the second drive

make a cheap computer or make a dual boot pc (two operating systems on one pc)
get another hard drive and load the os on it and just switch when you want to test

Get either VirtualPC, from Microsoft, or VirtualBox, from Innotek. Both are free. I personally prefer VirtualBox.
