It's not banned like coffee (which evidently has some horrible effect on people) and tea (which will probably kill you instantly if you drink it)

Soda is much worse for your health than either coffee or tea.

What about all the sugar in Jello salads and kool-aid, that they love so much?

We've made it very clear in previous questions that mormons have no problem with drinking caffeine in soda. But in coffee and tea it's bad.

I just don't join their religion. If they don't drink coffee or tea, that leaves more for me.

It is a matter of what you do and don't like. While in the Word of Wisdom there is specific instruction about alcohol and tobacco, there is nothing about coffee, tea or soda. We do not live tenents of religion such as how many steps we can walk in a day, therefore, we have been given parameters, not absolute directives (aside from the above mentioned ones) about what we should and should not ingest into our bodies. If someone chooses to abstain from soda because of their beliefs that is their choice, and might I add that many people choose not to drink coffee or tea for the same reasons many LDS people choose not to. We're not a mutually exclusive club when it comes to nutrition.

It's just a matter of taking care of the bodies that God gave us. We don't know all the details of WHY we're asked not to partake of certain things. It's a matter of obedience.

We stopped using alcohol and tobacco back in the 1800's. That's quite a bit before the FDA realized the harmful effects.

Who knows? Maybe sometime in the future scientists will discover why tea and coffee aren't so good for us, but until then it won't kill me to do without.

There is much more caffeine in coffee than in soda - in spite of what some urban legends claim. (I'm not a Mormon and don't agree with their laws, but there is still consistency. It's the idea of addiction that is a problem for them - and in that, they have a point.
On the other hand, I think you can find inconsistencies in any group of people, even health nuts.

They need very detailed manuals to tell then what or what not to do, until specifically sugary drinks is stated by a prophet some will choose to drink it and some will not. The sugar and caffeine really isn't the worst, the high fructose corn syrup is, linked to liver problems, and even illgeal in some countries.

For a change your are right. Soda is no more than chemicals in bubbling water. Most soda have nothing natural in them.
But so the your food in cans and bottles and veggie are sprayed with chemicals. Oh don't forget your drinking water. When the government get done with it. You are assured to have something will make you sick or more likely kill you. Oh well if that doesn't get you, you're going to die anyway.

People have their own parameters as to what is good for you and what is bad for you.

The Word of Wisdom specifically mentions Tobacco, alcohol, etc...that's why we don't drink those things. Some LDS do not drink colas because it is their personal opinion that colas are not good for you. That's a personal preference. It doesn't mean we all think it is good for you.

Guessed wrong! That would definately be a matter of personal opinion. Personally....ok my mom says....exactly what you said....ok not really. But she does say that soda is really really bad for you. But hey! There must be opposition in ALL things. Even health. God isn't going to tell us what not to eat on every. single. subject. This is where freedom of choice comes in. I drink soda very very rarely.....once every three months or so??? less? yea.

Well, as I hear it soda is not to popular in Utah either. Saw a news clip where the schools in Salt Lake City can not have soda machines. Only juice machines. Also they are not to happy with bottled water. In Salt Lake City most government sponsored events are not allowed to sell bottled water or soda.

I think the idea that caffeine is considered a "drug" is what gets them. They allow only decaffeinated drinks.
