Just want to add to what SgtMOTO sad about the F4U. The Navy gave it to the Marines because it was near impossible to land on a carrier. Coming at a low angle of attack the pilot could not see the flight deck. It was the British that taught us how to do it by coming to the ship from the side and then making the turn to land at the last minute.

Oh, my favorite aircraft is the first one I ever flew on. The DC3, AKA C47. I was six years old. Have flown on a couple since then. In 1989 on a trip to Bolivia it was great to see them still being used commercially.

The US Marine Corps Corsair, F4U. It is such a beautiful aircraft with it gull wings and 13 foot propellers. One of the best aircraft in the Pacific War, and very close second to the F6F Wildcat. Originally a Navy aircraft but they didn't like it because of its behavior patterns especially when carrier landing. So they gave them to the Marines and the Marines showed the Navy how they could be flown, landed, and used.
Heavily gunned, well armored, could carry a number of different weapons including bombs. Had some problems like all new aircraft do but most were eliminated. It was superior to its Japanese rivals and ran huge scores in aerial victories.

One story involved Lt.Alvin Jensen of the famous VMF 214 squadron. He became separated from his flight. Found himself over a Japanese airfield and alone began to strafe the aircraft on the ground and destroyed twenty-four enemy aircraft on the ground (verified).

The Corsair saw its last aerial battles in Korea when prop aircraft were being replaced by jets.

In the hands of Marine pilots it was an excellent ground support aircraft. When the Marines saw that gull-winged shape coming over the horizon they knew the enemy was in for a disastrous good time. Love it.

My two favorites are the F-16 and F-22. I saw the Air Force Thunderbirds perform in their Vipers and also got to see one of the first public performances of the F-22 at an air show a few months ago....I could have died happy right then, it was amazing.

McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. Also known as the "World’s Leading Distributor of MiG Parts," the amazing Phantom has been in squadron service for 47 years. Big, tough, loud, fast, and mean, it is the aeronautical equivalent of a big-block muscle car. Newer designs may surpass the Phantom's performance, but they'll never approach it for personality.

UH-1

Spent many Tuesdays sitting on the right door while Cpt Archibald had much fun flying low and fast. Nothing like buzzing a 600 year old castle 100ft. below or being so close to the grape vines you could pick them.

Lets keep an open mind out there. Sure Im American but i think the Russian Sukhoi 27/35 Flanker is a beautiful plane. Its sleek and fast despite its enormous size (50% larger than the Mig-29 and therfore easy to spot in combat).
The F-22? nice plane, too pricy.

I spent 4 years as an 11B. So my answer may be biased but the A-10, you just have an extra sense of safety when they are around
