An individual is not required to check papers for anyone unless they live in your house and you file schedule H or a W-2 for them. You also need their address and social security number if you plan to take the childcare credit.
A business must always complete form I-9 and see IDs for employees, and get a W-9 from any contractors who will receive more than $600. W-2s and 1099s must be filed with IRS annually, and I-9s must be retained in case ICE asks.

I have only hire US Citizens or LEGAL immigrants. Yes, I knew these people were either a US Citizen or Legal immigrant before I hired them for child care or elder care.
By the by, I worked a demanding full time job, so I needed to hire people to provide these services so I could work. I still cooked, cleaned, and the such when I got home. I just could never figure out how to physically be in two places at once.

I have hired mothers' helpers, and every single one of them have been US citizens.
I use a lawn service, and it is run by a guy that hires teenages and college students through his church.
And I could use a really good maintenace guy around the house--do you have a reference for one?

most people don't because, they can pay them under the table. and for very low wages. and get away with it. it's not the immigrants fault. it's the greed of the white man. that's the problem with immigration. if they checked the have to report it and pay taxes for thier services. can't have that.

I do not hire anyone to do such odds and ends because I am a young person with few odds and ends. If I did have odds and ends that required help, I would not check papers because it would cost me too much and I really do not care. If they do a good job, isn't that what counts? It is the main factor in my book.

No, I call their parents. But most of our work around our home is done by our own kids or friends who help us on big projects. I don't think I am too good to work, and having servants shows children how to be lazy.

If I hired someone, I would make sure they were legal. I made sure my "lawn guy" only hires legals. If he hired illegals, I would have found another "lawn guy!"

I don't hire strangers to come into my house! I only use American labor, mostly my own!

No, I don't. I think asking them something like that would scare them away whether they were legal or not.
