Well, basically, a codec is a way of telling the computer how to translate data into something else. Usually, they are used in terms of video and audio. By itself, the computer / program has no way to know how to play the file, or to tell it apart from any other type of file, like a picture. A codec helps the program turn the data into something useful, like a song or a movie.

A codec is a device or program capable of performing encoding and decoding on a digital data stream or signal.
Essentially it allows compression of data so that the file that is sent to you is smaller. There are many different codecs as each serves a specific purpose in data compression and decompression.

basically (i think) there are many kinds of videos or extensions of files, like mpeg , mp4, mp3, rar, .exe . these are the codecs and sometimes ur computer doesnt have them so u have to download em

.avi .mpeg .divx...etc...
