The information needed for a national ID card is already in the hands of numerous government agencies. Privacy is not the issue - the government, both federal and local agencies, as well as numerous private organizations (Social Security, The IRS, Military Records, Local Tax records, wage statements, credit card transactions, credit reporting agencies, etc) already have this data and much, much more.
The biggest fear many people have (and it's a legitimate fear) is the fact that the government hasn't a very stellar performance record when it comes to classified or private information data security. The thought of having all of this information in one data bank sounds like a shopping center for information hackers.
On the plus side is the fact that it would make welfare fraud, identity theft, undocumented workers, multiple identities, illegally obtained drivers' licenses and so forth much more difficult.
I personally think that the jury is still out on this one. I don't have a strong opinion on this issue - my only concern is that the agencies involved would have to necessarily be bullet proof when it comes to the security and privacy of this information - and I don't think, given the typical government bureaucracy, that this can be a realistic goal.

What difference would it make whether driver's licenses/ID cards are issued by the state or the federal government? We have no problem with the state government having an ID card for almost everyone, so why should we have a problem with the federal government doing it nationally?
btw, this whole implanted chip thing is nonsense. I have read the REAL ID Act and it would not allow such chips even if the government wanted to do it. But I still oppose REAL ID on unfunded mandate grounds.

Yes, I want a national ID! It is well past time that we had one. we need a secure ID that all Americans must present if they are to gain employment. IF we had a secure national ID, we would not have the problem of having 12 to 30 million illegals in the country. You paranoid delusional right wingers are amazing! You are terrified of having a national ID, although most civilized nations have them. What have you done that you don't want the govt to find out about?
We are at war with people who are determined to conquer us using any methods available including weapons of mass destruction and you are whining about having to carry an ID card in your wallet. Grow up! It is better to lose a little liberty than to lose your life. I find it astonishing that you people would rather die than give up your guns! That is just not rational!

Myself, speaking for myself here. I favor a national ID card. But I don't favor a national drivers license. There is an alternative. Encourage all citizens to get a Passport.
I must say though, that Ben Franklin was right, but under what conditions did he say that? What event in early American history was taking place to cause him to say that?

VOTE FOR RON PAUL! He will abolish the REAL ID act that may one day lead to implanted microchips.

I have a passport. Thanks anyway. Its always about some lurking menace that that makes these things necessary.
Its bad enough that we have a social security number that follows us around all our lives. I agree. Its not necessary.
