But you've got to admit that Jeff Gordon is the premiere driver of his era. Over the last 10 years, everytime you look on ESPN, there's Jeff Gordon winning this race, winning that race. Some people don't like him. But hey people don't like Barry Bonds either and he's still about to be the new HOMERUN KING! He seems to make more money than anyone. Stats say that he's won more championship cups than anyone of this era. He has more endorsements than any of the other drivers. What do the haters think about that?

I agree with you 110%. That is exactly why people hate Jeff Gordon. Because whether they like it or not he is the face of NASCAR rightnow and everybody thinks it should be Dale Jr or something. Jeff Gordon is the best on the track rightnow hands down, and nobody likes somebody who wins all the time. Thats why a lot of people hate Jeff Gordon.

Stock Car Racing Magazine delineated the eras in the March 2007 issue.

Richard Petty 1964-1975 Cups: '64, '67, '71,' 72, '74, 75, '79

DW 1979 -1985 Cups: '81, '82, '85

Dale Earnhardt 1986-1994 Cups: '80, '86, '87, '90, '91, 93, '94

Jeff Gordon 1995-2001 Cups: '95, '97, '98, '01

The magazine described the years since 2001 as a muddled mess, no one's era.

DW described Gordon's as a mini-era. In other words, a flash in the pan. "He won all those races and championships in a short period of time. If you look at the dominance of ..Richard or Earnhardt..it was 10 years. If you have a 10-year span, where you've dominated the sport, that's a pretty good run. Gordon has been close to that."

The author went on to say, "Gordon's still one of the best...But he hasn't dominated as he did earlier."

Humpy Wheeler added, "I'm not sure we will have another era. It takes about 10 years to be an era and the new car is going to make it harder to dominate. It'll be real difficult for anybody to win 10 or more races and that's pretty much what you've got to do to have your own era".

The author closed by saying, "This may be the dawn of a new kind of era - the era of television, the Internet and marketing. Perhaps this is the Dale Jr. era, when being rich, famous and marketable is more important than consistency and on-track dominance".

Remember, Dale Earnhardt, at 43 years of age, came within 34 points of postponing Jeff's mini-era in 1995 and at 48 years of age, came up 265 points short in 2000 of snuffing it out all together and extending his own from 1984 to 2000 and but for his untimely death, beyond.

In 1989, he lost a Cup by 12 points. That's 47 points away from 9 Cups and 312 points from 10 Cups.

Gordon's last best shot at 5 is probably this year, but with the Chase, who knows? It's anybody's within the Top 12. The way Gordon fans seem ready to pop the cork on the champagne with 16 races to go is against all logic.

I don't have to mention the comparitive IROC records but, I will.

Earnhardt with 4 Championships and 11 wins
Gordon with 0 Championships and 1 win.

I really don't care about Jeff Gordan, Dale Jr., or Bonds. But to answer your question, it's jealousy and disappointment. Everybody wanted Dale Jr. to be #1 because of his dad. What a lot of people don't know is that Gordan actually taught Jr. what he knows about driving. They will be driving for the same team next year. So, people should get a life and let the race go and the winner be the winner. They can't change what is to be or has been.

I'm not a Jeff Gordon fan, ur right he has won the cup 4X but he can only drive nascar--and when u look at Tony Stewart he's a "RACER" put him in anything or any track ( dirt, off road etc.) and he can suceed in all! He's a talented driver and racing is really who is and what he does!

I know Jeff Gordon Fans will say that he is the best.. but every fan is going to say theirs is.. no matter how many points, wins, or DNF's they have.. lets get over it and do other stuff.. we are now in agreement that our drivers are our drivers and that is the way it is.

Depends on what you define as "this era" because Gordon has four Cup titles to Earnhardt's seven. But yeah, you have to give him his props...
