I took my dog for a five mile hike with me the other day. Well long story short he didnt do to well and started to get dehydrated and signs of heat stroke. Well He made it home fine but when he got home he threw up a couple of times. I wet him down to make sure he would cool off quick. The next day I see that he is having trouble walking and using his back legs. any possible answers?

well it looks as though maybe he is just sore. The hike was yesterday and I didn't know he was like this till I got home. But for sure I'm going to take him to the vet. thanks.

You don't say how old your dog is, or how big, but this sounds like heat stroke.
Don't take your dog on long hikes like that, especially if it is hot out..
You need to get him to a vet asap to be sure there is no kidney damage from the dehydration.

Sounds like heat stroke, like you said but he should of been better the next day I would think. Also maybe he was just very sore from such a long hike. My dogs went camping last week and were both very sore from running up hills and stuff.my female also had trouble getting up and down and had trouble using her back legs. Pretty scary. I hope that your dog feels better soon and that he didnt get ahold of something that made him sick. If he dont get better after a day or two I think maybe you should call a vet or something, but Im sure you feel the same way huh? Good luck to u and the dog.....

Well, first off, the worst thing to do to a dog in heat stroke is to cool them off quick. Quick cooling can actually kill them and you can actually make them hypothermic.
You're dog may be having some really bad reaction to heat stroke if that is really what happened. It can produce muscle death, caused by high levels of lactic acid in the muscles. Then they get myeloglobulinemia - which is destruction of the oxygen carrying component in muscle breaking down and getting onto the blood stream. The body can't tolerate high levels of this and can cause problems with liver and kidney function.
Sometime animals in heat stoke go into DIC - decimated cardiovascular coagulation. Their vessels bleed and clot continuously exhausting all clotting factors and the dog basically bleeds internally. DIC is also coined by many as "death is coming" or "dead in car."
It's important that is your dog is acting abnormal, you have him evaluated by a veterinarian and follow their recommendations for diagnostic tests and treatments. You're dog may have an issue completely unrelated to your walk, but stress of the walk may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

It sounds like your dog did have a heat storke or a mild seizure if he is having trouble with his legs. There's not much you can do and if you don't take him to the vet to get some fluids and get him checked out, it may result in permanent damage!!! Make sure he stays pretty cool, and drinks a lot of water and rests, but either way, he needs to go to the vet!

Probably overused his muscles. It's like if you work out really hard and you're not used to it, the next day you're really stiff and sore. If he is older, he may have arthritis flaring up. Go for shorter walks early morning or in the evening. Hose the dog down first to help keep him cool, and bring a bottle of ice water to offer him periodically. If he is still not feeling good, you might want the vet to check him out tomorrow morning.

Did he trip on something to hurt his legs? Perhaps the ground was too hot for him and it burned his pads on his feet? I know from having dogs of my own they do NOT do so well in the heat, and walking them for 5 miles is not a good thing in hot humid weather. It is normal for them to get an upset stomach due to heat and then vomit, i would keep an eye on his leg and if it dont get better in a few days take him to his vet.

The dog was overdriven and may be suffering from oxygen deprivation (stroke). He needed to be seen by the vet yesterday. Take him now!

Possible heat exhaustion. Is he drinking water? He could also be muscularly sore from such a long walk. What were you thinking, anyway?

It could be soreness from the length of your hike, or more problems associated with heatstroke, please take him to a vet.
