i know i can pay an investigator ....is there a free website ?

You can try military.com and search on buddy finder. I'm there.

The best way would be to ask to see a DD 214 most things like AKO (army knowledge online) weren't around till the late 90's so if they were in before then they won't be listed.

they can show you a DD-214 or you can go to / call any post locator or you can go to any VA medical center and they should be able to find post military members.
