I bought a chicken from the store, left it sealed, froze it, and then moved it to the fridge to defrost. Now the bag is still sealed but it is inflated. What is going on?

that happens when you live in a high elevation Do you?

It's nothing to worry about if you do live in a high elevation. if you don't, I don't blame you for being suspicious.

I'm wondering how fresh the chicken was when you bought it. Take it out of the bag and sniff it. If it has a bad odor, throw it out. I don't know why it would give off carbon dioxide unless it could be spoiled. If it were me, I'd probably throw it out if I wasn't sure. Chicken is extremely perishable. Is your freezer functioning well? It has to be a certain temperature to freeze foods properly. Anyway, my grandma had a saying: "If in doubt, throw it out." Might save you from food poisoning.

Bacteria - sorry it must have been previously frozen and then since you refroze it it became a safe haven for bacterial growth. Sorry this one is a loss - if you still have the receipt and it is within 7 days of purchase you may be able to return it to the store for replacement, if not toss it. Good Luck!

usually that means that the chicken has gone bad and gases from the bad meat have started to blow up the bag. Throw it out
