depends on where you live. in colorado a couple can marry themselves, that is sign the certificate to solemnize the marriage.

they can get married legally at the courthouse, then have you do the spiritual ceremony later.

That's awsome - I'm a granddaughter asking the same thing of my gramps in upstate NY for a Sept 2008 Wedding. My grandfather really means alot to me and I do not want some stranger marrying us. He'll be in the pictures, our hearts, and memories. He has alway been there for me encouraging me in all my ups and downs in life and never missed a beat!

He's going to talk his town board to see if they can make him a judge for a day. He is very active in his small town so this may be a possiablity. Then we will not need a JP - check your states, county, town laws.

If this doesn't work out, this is the plan. We will have a JP with on the side, just hanging out. My grandfather will talk to his minister friend and come up with some good things to say and run it by us at some point before the wedding, no religious mumbo. Then at the wedding this is how it will happen. We will stand infront of him, the senior member of my family, he will go through the whole ceremony and stop before he says you are now man and wife. My fiance and I will turn to our attendants, they will hand us roses, we will turn around and begin to walk down the isle, then give each others mothers flowers (secret surprise) when we return to the alter the JP will join my grandfather and they together can say - you are now Husband and Wife. You may now kiss the the bride/your wife/the new Mrs. X.

Good luck and keep me posted on your plans. Maybe you and my grandfather can talk if your located in NY State and share ideas.

Check with the city hall in the town/city where your grandaughter lives or will be married.

Most states allow you to apply for a 1 day licese to officiate a marriage ceremony WITHOUT having to become ordained or anything.

I have friends who were married by a mutual friend that is neither a minister nor a justice of the peace. So I would check locally before taking any further steps.

Good luck!

IF you are affiliated with a local church, go talk to the minister THERE... bring your grandaughter WITH you and have HER explain to the minister what she would like to have done at her wedding---I THINK that as long as the minister is THERE on the alter WITH your grandfather and the MINISTER does everything FIRST--(bless the rings, pronounces you man and wife, etc), your grandfather CAN repeat the words DIRECTLY after so that he would IN AFFECT be "marrying you and your new husband".... it's actually a VERY touching idea and if the minister is as moved about it as I was when I read the question, he SHOULD allow something like this to be done WITHOUT any classes or anything...

I agree with Proud - I am an ordained minister through the Universal Life Church and it is legal in most, if not all, of the United States. You will have to check with the county recorder's office to be sure it's legal first. Their web site is : www.ulc.net

Some states requier that you regester with them. Other Require that you just be an ordained minster or a public offical ( http://www.themonastery.org/ allows you to get ordained in just three minutes) most all that you need is a wedding certificate and anyone can do the wedding. Over all the best place for information on this is http://marriage.about.com/cs/marriagelicenses/a/usmarlaws.htm

You can be certified through online classes. Google words like "becoming a minister"

You would have to contact the state authorities to find out what the requirements are for you to be able to perform the ceremony.
