Mormon was a Prophet in the Book of Mormon. Mormon took all the plates that had been written on my the Prophets since Nephi and condensed them into what is currently the Book of Mormon.

It is also the nick-name for the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The word is the name of a prominent character in the book of Mormon, a scripture proclaimed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mormon directed his son Moroni to keep safe the chronicles of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel in the New World and Jesus' appearance there after his resurrection in Palestine. Moroni is said to have appeared to Joseph Smith and showed him the books in the 19th Century, starting the religion. It's a rather different approach to Christianity than the other denominations.

Essentially, it is a made-up word out of the creative mind of Joseph Smith, as a name of a Semitic warrior who lived in America about 400AD. Smith reflected once that the name "Mor-Mon" translated to "More Good" in contemporary English. If "Mormon" spoke 'Hebrew', or at least a dialect of it, the chances of the an English word popping up centuries before the language developed from Germanic is remote.

Actually the entire Book of Mormon's historicity is suspect, if not an outright fraud, if Smith is to be believed about it's origin.

A Mormon is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day Saints. We believe that God is our Heavenly Father and that he has a salvation plan for us, that Jesus is his son and that he died for our sins in the cross. We are Christians and we believe in eternities (hey, I love that :)
The name Mormon is because of angel Moroni's father, Mormon (that was his name) We are also known as LDS, which stands for Latter Day Saints.
