It is an offence to drive an unroadworthy vehicle.
Incorrect tyre pressures could be considered to make the car unroadworthy.

My car has pressure-sensors in the tyre valves, so that I know when the tyre pressure require adjustment. Unfortunately the last time was because of a leak between the rim and the pressure sensor, which cost quite a lot to fix.

It is an offence - but the reliability of modern cars in every other respect means that drivers will ignore this. This is human nature. Safety is often ignored - so we should either increase the training and/or improve the systems to provide an increased margin of error.

A high tech solution is to re-design wheels so that the pressure is fixed. I've seen some models based on solid tyres, i.e. not inflated, but made of strands of a range of fibres under the outer carcass.

A simpler approach, available now, is to have tyres inflated with nitrogen. The rate of gas loss on these is much lower, though at a cost when refilling. I've used this service on a motorcycle very effectively.

Google this for local suppliers...

It should be a matter of stupidity. Yes, many accidents have been caused by incorrect tire pressure. Look at the Ford Explorer problem. Many tires have lost pressure when they were running low pressures and then that caused the SUV to turn over. Ford took the hit for this, but nobody said anything about them running with low tires and not knowing how to drive a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

it can be, i drove a toyota back from southampton a few weeks ago, and at 75 it was wallowing like a pig in a bath of glue... in fact i slowed down to 55 it was that bad... the tyre pressure in teh book is 34-38 she had them at 26... on the front, 28 and 34 on teh back... and it felt like it was constantly crabbing... put some air in the tyres and it drives like it should.

it is an offense to have incorrectly inflated tyres, and if its the case in an accident the insurance company wont pay out because of the contributing factors...

yes it is ,they have prov-en that this helps contribute to accidents because the tires wont grip right in the event you have to make a sudden stop,i don't know what the percentage is on it right now but i have seen several write ups on the subject, and the say that over 60 % of the vehicles on the road at any given time does not have the right air pressure in the tires, this also uses more gas,in some cases if you cause a bad accident because of something you should have checked, i think it should be considered an offense,if it causes an accident, this is jusy my opinion, but i wouldnt be mad if i caused one from neglect and got cited for it,i dont know how everyone else feels about it though, good luck on it,hope this helps.

It already is an offence.

It's covered within 'maintaining your vehicle in a safe condition for operation on the road'.

People should be checking tyre pressures, tyre tread, lights, oil levels, brake fluid levels, washer fluid, and many more. If, after an accident, it was discovered that someone had not maintained their car properly, they could be prosecuted.

The Highway Code should explain it more.

It already is an offence.

The underlying factor here is that if people are too lazy to check tyre pressures, then what else are they neglecting?

Slack tires will make any situation worse, however it still requires some form of error or inattentiveness from the driver, otherwise it's possible for a skilled (and I mean VERY skilled) driver to manage just fine.

It's certainly no good to have incorrect pressure but I can assure you that mechanical failures are more likely than blown tires. No matter what all kinds of fords want you to believe:

I'd say inattentive drivers are more the cause of fatal accidents than slack tires.
