Well... for starters... God is the only 'god' that lays claim to creation. The Bible, His divine Word, has survived thousands of years of banning and persecution... more than ANY other book in history. I believe it is because it is protected.
Also.... the other religions believe in a god who is an actual man. Someone who is tangible that lives either right now or in the recent past. How can someone who was born and lived long after the dawn of man be god? Also... time and time again the Bible has laid out facts that can be traced back in history. There is solid evidence of the flood of Noah's time, and the Ark was discovered in our own lifetime! Other gods claim things as prophecy and then when it doesn't happen they change their story.
I could go on and on, but, there are three books that really solidified my faith in our Lord and Jesus Christ as our saviour.
The books are by author Lee Strobel:
The Case for a Creator
The Case for Christ
The Case for Faith
and
The Challenge of the Cults and New Religions
all of these books are great for faith foundation.
As for what your brother said.... well, if you are truley living in Christ... then would you not be a reflection of Him and treat people nicely? You do hear stories of horrid people who accept Christ on their death bed and 'go to heaven'. My answer to that is that God knows your true heart. If you are only accepting Christ so that you can get into heaven because you are afraid and you truley do not believe... then you go to hell. We don't know where people end up... that is not for us to judge. Yes... if someone is just evil and then all of the sudden accepts Christ at the last moment... but they truley have seen the light and believe.. then I believe they do go to heaven. But as for being a believer and being mean... well then you have to wonder if the person really does believe if they have faith yet treat eachother horribly.
When we accept Christ... we begin a walk. We will never be perfect but it is our goal to be a reflection of Christ and show the love and character that Christ has shown us. How much faith can a person have it they aren't actively trying to reflect Christ's character and are being mean to others.
So... it isn't about deeds... you can't get to heaven by being 'a nice person', but it is your faith... and ONLY God knows where that lies. Maybe there is a person who truely believes in God, but is a horribly grouchy person. I believe they still go to heaven if they were trying in their own way to do what was right during their lives and just couldn't overcome what ever was making them grouchy. Only God knows who gets in and who doesn't. That isn't our place to judge.
A lot of people use what your brother said as a cop out to doing what is right. If you are doing wrong and you know it is wrong then how are you pleasing God, and how are you going to account for it during judgment day?
I hope this helped some... I am glad to see that you are searching more to strenghthen your faith instead of discount it. The books I suggested are really insightful... I am not much of a reader and tend to 'not get things' unless they are very practical and laid out uniformly. These books are great for someone like me, but also for others.
God Bless!! I hope this helped a lil!!

Allow me to say congratulations for taking that step to becoming a better human being. The world is looking for proof of God's existence but for whatever reason God wants us to accept that he exist by faith, maybe by believing without evidence it the true test of love.
I can't tell you I've ever heard a voice from Heaven or seen a vision of God however things happened in my life that could have only been orchestrated by the hand of God. Here's just one example: As part of a gang 3 of my guys told me that some guys on the south of town jumped on them, they told me not to go because these guys were too tough- but I was always hard-head so once they were out of sight I traveled a long way onto the southside and found the guy. I confronted him as he was coming out of his house so he knew I was their for one reason only. He asked me if the 3 guys following me was my back-up I turned around and there were 3 guys I had beaten once before now together. This southside guy suggested I deal with my problem before stepping to him so I did. I was doing pretty good at first going against all 3 but has the fight went on I was taking hard blows and the moment I felt like was going to hit the ground this southside guy I came to fight knocked out one of the 3 guys and the other 2 took off.
God knew these guys were following me and he knew I would need help to defeat them so he used my enemy to help me fight my battle.

Look at the world around you ... the WHOLE world, not just the 'tiny little corner' that you live in. Do you realize that even though we humans have been 'keeping track' of the 'other species' on this planet for nearly 5000 years, we still DO NOT KNOW ALL OF THEM? We don't even know all of the 'different kinds of rocks' in the world yet! THAT to me is 'the best proof there is a God' because ONLY GOD could have created not just THIS WORLD but BILLIONS OF WORLDS around MILLIONS OF STARS JUST IN THIS GALAXY ... and this 'galaxy' is only one of many different galaxies in this 'universe' of ours. That is the only 'proof' I need to 'know' that God is REAL 100%.
As for religions ... there is some good and some 'wrong' in all religions ... because even the 'concept' of religion is 'man-made.' I am now a Catholic ... but I've been a Methodist, a Vedantist, a Vietnamese Buddhist, an Episcopalian, and I 'believe' things from many other religions. ONE of the 'reasons' I am a Catholic, is that you can become a Catholic and still 'believe' in the lessons learned from other religions.
Your brother is both 'right' and 'wrong' when he says 'you don't need to be nice to go to Heaven.' SOME people believe that you can behave as 'badly as possible' (be a serial killer, mass murderer, abortionist) and 'go to Heaven' if you 'accept Christ as your Savior' two seconds before you die.
I do believe that Christ is the ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD, and that he DIED ON THE CROSS FOR ALL OF OUR SINS ... but if that was 'all' it was about, everyone who died BEFORE CHRIST DIED would be 'condemned to Hell for Eternity' ... yet the Bible tells us about Christ going up into the mountains and meeting Moses, and Elijah and someone else ... and they were 'already living in Heaven.'
So what DO I BELIEVE? I believe that when Christ said 'He who believeth in me shall have everlasting life' was not speaking about 'the person Jesus' but about the GOD of whom Jesus was only a part ... and that for him that 'believing' was more like 'a person who does good, just for the good of it' rather than anyone actually 'believing in God' as a 'human-shaped being' ...
God made 'man in His own image' ... and most people believe that to mean that the 'human shape' is 'equal to' the 'physical shape of God' ... but God doesn't 'live' in this 'great but tiny' universe of ours ... God lives in the universe we call Heaven ... and I believe that God is SO LOVING AND SO FORGIVING THAT ALL OF US (even the serial killers, etc.) will 'go to Heaven' in the end. God 'lives' outside of both 'time' and 'space' ... so when God 'implies' that some of us will 'go to Hell for eternity' HOW DO WE KNOW THAT ETERNITY means 'forever and beyond' ... Maybe in God's Universe the word that 'translates' to 'eternity' in English actually means 'for a while' be that a minute, a day, or five years. I believe that Purgatory/Hell is more like 'summer school' than an 'eternal punishment' ... it's a place/time where those who 'fell behind' can 'catch up' and eventually 'join all the rest of us' in Heaven ... and I am 'looking forward to that time ... because only then will I get to find out 'the rest of the story.'

when you see all that God created you can know that he is real, like when you see a building you know that someone built it. It didn't appear over time or anything. So you are proof of God.
You should ask God to make himself real to you, You CAN know that he is 100% real, and He will answer any question you ask. -"ask and you shall receive, seek and you will find"
And you can never do enough, or be nice enough to get into heaven. But if you ask God to forgive you, and if you accept what Jesus did on the cross, you can know that you are going to heaven.
I hope you find your answers!

You my friend are having trouble believing in the god presented to you! Similiar to what happened to Martin Luther. To be honest there is no 100% correct faith. Not to try to convert, but I had the same feelings. See my question, "Does anyone share this faith?" and it presents my own home made religion that makes the most sense to me.
Here is an exert if you can't find it:
I was an atheist but now I am spiritual. I believe in one god but he is radically different from the god in the bible. My god is forgiving and won't damn you to hell if you don't believe in him. He has been around long enough to understand other people's situations and only cares if you have a good heart. There is no Hell, there is only correction and understanding. If someone is evil, he will make them understand why they were evil and make them do good works to redeem themselves in an after life. My God does not have a great amount of influence on earth. He can only vagly comunicate with us. Otherwise how would he let things like Rowanda and The hollocost happen.

If you're really looking for some truth, try the LDS missionaries. There's no harm in at least investigating. They believe that if you ask in faith you will receive.
James 1:5-6
"5. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed."
Just make sure that if you pray to God, be sincere. Pray with true intent. Besides, there is no harm in at least trying.

I don't think there will ever be 100% proof of God.I do believe in God though.I think believing in God is like believing blue is a beautiful color I don't have proof it is beautiful but to me it is.Another might not see it that way.I hope that was a good example and a good way to explain it.

First of all... you either believe in him or you don't
Have you ever looked at a newborn baby?? How do you think a body fluid can create a baby?? Or have you ever looked at a rainbow? They don't just appear from nowhere. God created the universe for all people to believe. He is waiting for you to accept him as Lord and Savior. He loves you no matter what!! And you don't have to be good to get in Heaven but you don't have to bad to go to Hell either. It's just a choice. Which one will you choose???? If you were standing in front of two doors... one is Heaven and the other is Hell... which one would you go in??

Jesus taught truth.
He said "you will know the truth and the truth will set you free".
There is a truth otherwise Jesus would not say this.
If you are honest hearted and approach God sincerely in prayer, and ask him to reveal himself to you in Jesus name. he will show you what you need to know to have confidence in his existence. Interesting things start happening when you make a prayer such as this so keep your eyes open and your heart honest.and ask daily as to show your seriousness to god
By the way Jesus made this statement above because he new that many would be looking and asking the same questions you just did. because many people are upset and confused about religion nowadays, this usaully causes people to ignore god altogether. Dont fall into this trap.
peace
