A user on my forum found this in his yard. He lives in Doncaster, North East UK. Any leads to an ID welcome.

the calyx looks like it is in the eggplant family=solanaceae. go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/urtica/ and enter eggplant in search box

If I were Linnaeus I'd go with, Solanum screwballii. And yes, I do know the name of this one, S. pyrocanthus aka Porcupine Tomato and it is edible. RScott

some kind of tomato? ive never seen anything quite like this, though. as the two previous answers suggest, id think it is in that family. /do you know if it is still growing? it would be interesting to see what the ripe fruit looks like. also the leaves. /some rare Andean species someone brought back to UK? //its not a bad answer, you moron; neither is curious orange's answer.

The fruit resembles an aubergine (eggplant) or a persimmon, but this plant looks very strange to me!
