I am trying to strip the varnish off of a rifle stock so that I can re-stain and finish it. I have let a good coat of stripper soak on it for about 45 minutes and it isnt removing the coating. The coating is becoming a bit tacky and if I try hard enough I can scrape it off. I dont want to scrape, cause I know its going to leave marks in the wood.

Should I let it keep soaking or try something else? What exactly is the "varnish" they use on gun stocks, damn it is some thick stuff!

I've used Easy Off oven cleaner like Tom Sawyer suggests with good results, to refinsh an M1 Garand Stock.

Use Easy-Off Oven cleaner. Spray well, outside on newspaper. Wait 10 minutes, rinse with boiling water and scrub with nylon bristle brush.Wear gloves and glasses. Let dry overnight, it'll look white and ruined. Buff with 0000 steel wool (Four-OH) to knock off raised "whiskers". Wipe with tack cloth. You can stain, or just refinish natural. I prefer Homer Formby's Low Gloss Tung Oil. It's hard to mess up, buff with steel wool between coats, use tack cloth, I like 3 coats. Oh, NEVER ever use sandpaper!

Spray brake parts cleaner and a brass brush; outside in the fresh air; and keep your eyes protected. It is more of a plastic coating than varnish and a real witch to get off; welcome to the club.

My Harley loves to set in the parking lot at strip clubs. If you are going to behave there you have no business being there. Fuzzy holes that is a new one for me.......I love it. Rock on!
