this car could have the renault/bendix fuel injection[very similar to Jeep systems 87-92] or bosch LH
both systems will store codes and are retrievable through the under hood socket box for fuel codes plug pig tail into socket #2 and depress button for 2 seconds and release. the red led will flash a 3 digit code [1 1 1 is the system passes code] repeat until first code is repeated then do the same for socket #6 [ignition] these codes can then be interpreted with a haynes or bentley manual
note: if lh system after reading codes unplug the mass air flow meter [this forces engine into limp home mode [it wont run very good , but if it is a power improvement over being plugged in you need a air mass unit. some times this is not picked up by the code system, if it was and power improved you have double confermation and can proceed accordingly. when done codes can be cleared through the diagnostic terminals or by disconnecting the battery ground terminal for 10-30 seconds
i have had a couple over the years with aging timing belts and teen drivers that the timing belt jumped a tooth or two and would bog as you describe with no codes stored and no other actual faults so this is worth checking

I guess the check engine lamp is not on. Fuel pressure check first. If ok try unplugging the mass meter while running and test drive. Possibility pre-pump in tank . Outside guess, knock sensor, engine speed sensor. Possible malfunction in EGR system.

I'd guess that you may have a plugged exhaust system, sometimes the honeycomb in the catalytic converter comes apart and plugs the exhaust. This is especialy true on turbo models.

You may just need to adjust the kickdown cable.
