We used to joke with our physiology prof by asking why does water go in clear and come out amber while beer goes in amber and comes out clear?

When we drink a lot of fluids the urine is dilute and has a low specific gravity. The concentration of urochromes, the pigments giving urine its pale yellow color, is low, so the urine appears clear. When fluids are restricted, the urine is more concentrated and contains more urochromes, hence it appears yellow. The specific gravity is higher, too. A high urine specific gravity plus the presence of ketones are indicators of possible dehydration. But a yellow color alone does not indicate dehydration. It is a normal condition. Normally we become thirsty long before we dehydrate. Some athletes engaged in intense activities such as marathon running, may not be aware of their thirst, which is why they are encouraged to drink along the way.

Certain drugs color the urine, such as riboflavin. In hepatitis, bile or conjugated bilirubin can color the urine a deep yellow color. When shaken, the foam on normal urine is white. In hepatitis, the foam is yellow. (Please wash well after performing such test!)

When you are dehydrated your body shades from yellow to orange in seriousness of dehydration. If your urine is clear, your hydrated.

It will be bright yellow (almost flouresent at times) if you are taking vitamins. If it is dark enough that you wouldn't be able to read through it....you are very dehydrated. Just try to drink plenty of water throughout the day and watch your pee lighten up!

It means your urine is concentrated and a lot of times it means you aren't getting enough water. Healthy pee should be very light to clear color if you truly are getting enough water though medications and foods can cause a discolor in your pee too. Also infections like bladder, urinary, and kidney can cause darker urine too. You urine and bowel movements tell you a lot about your health.
