Yes, I was raised to have manners, plz, T.U. Sorry. All that. Now, I am getting upset at the people who DON'T have manners. Please be honest in answering this.

Should I stop being polite, because they say if you do use manners you are wasting your time and rude people don't know what they mean because mom and dad never taught them. Why should I waste my breath and time?

Do manners get you promotions or anything in life, or get you the person of your dreams? No. I don't think so.

I try to be nice because it was instilled in me as a child. But it gets me upset in the real world when you see people acting meanly or gruffly. When it's ingrained it's always there nagging at you to be good and decent.

It's all about karma, JennyLee. It doesn't matter if someone sees you being polite. If you're walking down the street, and an older woman drops all her bags, don't you want to help her pick them up? I would. It doesn't matter what I was taught. It's just what comes from your heart. I would feel terrible just walking by and not helping her. Just always do the right thing. You wanted honesty, and that's how I feel. :) btw, Interesting question deserves a star.

NEVER lower yourself to other peoples standards ... being polite and having good manners are so important and do not go unnoticed. But, this has to be unconditional, do not always expect people to either notice or reward you for being polite, do it because it is the right and proper thing to do.
Conversely make sure you are not using TU, sorry etc too much and in a way that leads people to believe you are obsequious or lack assertiveness.

Hope this helps and be proud of the fact your parents raised you with good values.

You say that having manners won't get you anywhere in life but that is patently untrue. There are still many corporations that use the "lunch interview" to hire, and those without good table manners are turned down in favor of those who do.

Customer service and sales jobs (especially professional corporate sales) demand good etiquette and politeness.

Is the person of your dreams rude? Then by all means, lower yourself to that level so that you can identify with him or her. But many folks with good breeding wouldn't dream of being with someone who didn't say please and thank you and use (at the minimum) your basic priniciples of etiquette.

Whatever you choose to put out into the world is what you get back from it. It's your option, but don't complain when you get cynical whining and bitching.

If you were the only person in the world who had manners, you need to keep displaying them. One of the reasons this world is spiraling downwards is the utter disdain of people for the niceties of life and treating others with respect. "Please", "thank you", "excuse me", "please, you go first". If not only the words, but the actions and heart were behind these phrases in each human being....life could be much more pleasant.

manners make you an impressionable, respectful person. It shows gratitude and appreciation for people. If more of the world could act like that maybe it would help us all be a little more thankful for each other, instead of having no regard for our fellow man/woman. Keep it up. it will get you noticed and appreciated.

Do you do the right thing because of the reward, or because it's the right thing? Are you well-behaved in December to get loads of Christmas presents, or are you "good for goodness' sake"?

Set these people a good example. Their bad behavior won't excuse yours.

i feel EXACTLY the same way!! i was raised to be considerate and polite, and i get very tired of being ms. nice girl when most other people around me are so inconsiderate and rude.

no, don't stop being polite! if we stop, they won't have ANYONE to set an example for them...and no one to teach the future generations!!

don't become one of 'them'!!

Manners really do count with most people. You don't have to go overboard. If someone does something for you, just say thanks. I think please is kind of outdated. Excuse me is easy enough. Even if the recipient is too rude to appreciate it, others will notice.

I agree it's tough when no one else is polite, but please keep doing it. It is the right thing to do and people will respect you more for it.

Thank you for asking (HA).
