Sure they can. Eliminate those of the opposing ideology, such as the Communists in Afghanistan, and the war is won.

The Crusades used swords and arrows to drive the Muslim conquerors from Europe - and it worked just fine. France commemorates the victory with the 'croissant'.

Perhaps what you meant to say is that one cannot change the ideology of a people with bullets and bombs.

Seems to have worked well in the past. The question should be when will politicians learn that they cannot micro manage from Washington and call the shots from there. That is what happened in Korea, Viet Nam and now this mess. Let the soldiers do the job they were trained to do.

"The pen is mighter than the sword" is a quaint adage, but when it comes down to it, extremists aren't so quaint.
It would've been nice to go into this war at least trying to understand the Iraqi mindset. But that's one of the many "what ifs..."
Do you think the former Ba'athist party would've responded to a strongly worded letter with anything more than laughter?
This current sectarian violence is wrought with religious ideologies much stronger than the average american will ever imagine, how would you propose we deal with bad men with big guns, with a let's be friends hug?

nice thought but impossible when dealing with certain types or religions running governments! if you brought that up to the taliban or al qaida they wouldn't shoot u, just take a sword and sever your head!
