I was pressured into joining the dep program (delay entry program) by my army recruiter. When i decided that I wasn't ready to ship out my army recruiter said the only way out was to show up at meps (military entrance processing stations) on my ship out date for basic, signs the contract, but leave the hotel at night and not get on the plane in the morning. I did what he said, but now I trying to join the nation guard and the national guard recruiters said that I was AWOL and the only thing he can do is get me a dishonorable discharge for failure to show up for basic. I just know to know if this if true, and how can I get a copy of my dd214 right away so I can appeal and get it change to an honorable discharge so I can got into the national guard. THANK YOU

You are not AWOL. The bottom line is you do not owe the Army anything because you did not get a plane ticket, you did not get a paycheck. You are not AWOL with a dishonorable discharge. The fact of the matter is, your considered a DEP loss. Your National Guard recruiter doesn't know what he's talking about. You can't get a DD214 because your entrance date into the military is given to you once you get to your basic training site.

You are about to be screwed big time. You are only AWOL for 30 days. On the 31st day you become a DESERTER. When and if you ever get stopped by the police for speeding or anything else or you go apply for a job or use your social security number for something you will be arrested because it is a Federal offense. Not sure who all these retards are that are telling you stuff, Army and National Guard. You need to turn yourself in to the closest Army or military base if you don't live near an Army base. Until you turn yourself into the Army authorities your Deserter time is just going to get longer and longer and the punishment will continue to get worse as time passes. I hope you know the full name and rank of your Army Recruiter if you are telling the truth with this story.

Next, you aren't going to get your DD214, you are a Deserter and will stay that way until you turn yourself in.

And, you aren't getting anything like this overturned to anyone positve so you can enlist in the National Guard or any other branch of the military.

Grow up, get yourself together and take responsibility for your really jacked up actions. You were an adult when you decided to enlist in the Army, your story has huge holes in it, if any part of it is true you and your recruiter are both crazy. Turn yourself in!

Look this is how DEP works, Right now now matter what the recruiters say YOU ARE NOT ON ACTIVE DUTY or in the Guard or what ever you were looking to join. Unless you have stood on the RED carpet for the 2ND time and raised your hand you are not in. Look all you have to do is say I do want go and do not show up. You be released from DEP with ill effects. Of course the recruiters will tell you otherwise its there job. Look you can them right NOW you want to be released they HAVE let you go they may try and jerk you around but it is just for show. I was a Navy recruiter back in the early 90's so I do know what I am talking about plus I did do 20yrs and now I get a ret check but that aside in your the answerer is NO so do not sweat it.

You never shipped to Basic therefore you have a DEP Discharge. You can get back in it is just alot more paperwork for the recruiter. For the person that said recruiters make money of you going in no we dont. We are told we have A qouta but if we dont meet it all the do is just make us work more hours so we are away from our families more.

Ya way to pick on the recruiter that didnt wanna do this job in the first place morons

Of course that's true. You signed a contract and then backed out on it. You're lucky the National Guard recruter didn't call the military police; didn't you know that AWOL is desertion and during a war is a treasonous offense?

Do what the national guard recruiter says and don't whine about it. You're looking at a possible 10 year sentence in Leavenworth

Yes, but probably not. Most of the time if you fail to show up for DEP, you receive an administrative discharge. I know a few people who did that. They did not receive a DD214 but were merely allowed to leave.

I talked to a colleague who used to be a Navy recruiter. The only correct answer so far is Lexus. Good job!

Do yourself a favor and join a branch that knows what there doing.....Semper Fidelis! You are in no trouble for not going to boot camp. Your not obligated to serve anytime in the army or get discharged for time you didn not serve. I think both your recruiters are giving you the run around. Sorry that you got stuck with numbskulls of servicemen.

Well, once you sign and make your commitment with the government and then you wish to cancel it because you don't like it, well it will bring you consequences that later in life you will regret. It will follow you all though your life and it will hurt you. So before you make a decision that later on you are going to regret, ask for help and maybe you will come to an agreement with the Army. Good luck !

The recruiter was an idiot and should be court martialed himself. Proving it is another matter. You are in deep doodoo. Once you took the oath at the station, you were in the army and failure to follow orders is breaking the law.

uh yea that AWOL....if you join national guard you still have to ship out.. u still have to go through basic... why did you let the recruiter do that to you? they do that to make money off of you.. they sell the service to you.. and make commission of it.. its not that bad.. the only way out is to graduate.. thats what i was told for 2 yrs..
