I just installed new grass in the backyard and have trained my 5 year old dog to go potty there. The problem is, I've just discovered some small white worms in some of his fecal matter that was left on the grass overnight. When he went potty again, I checked his fresh poop and saw no worms. Are the small white worms considered larvae from the flies or are they from my dog? And are these worms bad for the soil? The patches of grass I installed is in a huge flower-bed like area that I installed with plywood. Thanks.

These are not caused by flies. What you are seeing are tapeworms. Tapeworms are segments from a larger worm inside your dogs stomach. They break off into segments and often come out through there stool. They are caused when an animal ingests flees. They are relatively easy to get rid of, just go to your vet and you'll get some medication. To prevent them from reoccurring I would take precautions to make sure your animal isn't around and flees.

If the worms were still there from the day before, they came from the yard. Tapeworm segments are very visible for a short time after being expelled with the stool. Keep an eye on his stool right after he goes, and if you see anything get some medication from your vet. The tapeworm segments dry up pretty fast and look like rye seeds--they won't still be there moving the next day.

If it looks like grains of rice then it is Tapeworms. They come from a dog ingesting a flea.... all it takes is one. It is not life threatening unless you do not treat them within a few months and they're easily treated. They may not show up every time a dog poops. Just call you vet and get dewormer. I buy large amounts since I have many Danes. Usually treat them several times a year - mainly summer since that's when fleas seem to get out of hand.

You need to get your dog to the vet to have her stool tested.
It is easy enough to deworm her once you know what the worm is - the vet will give you medicine to do it.

Just get her tested, some worms can be very harmful to your dog. Do not take a chance and let this go.

These worms are maggots from fly larvae. Tapeworms are different and can only be seen in fresh stools. They look like little grains of white rice. Maggots are gross, but not bad for the soil.
