I've only been grounded a few times and when I was grounded I couldn't leave my room or watch TV or play video games.

For our daughters it depends, if it's not to serious, they may lose their IPOD, Phone, .... privileges for a week. If it's serious, they usually spend some time time on their bed, and then are grounded from EVERYTHING (phone, bikes, toys, TV, ................) until the grounding is up.

Right now if I grounded my 15 year old daughter, I would first take her cell phone. Depending on what she is grounded for. Grounding would mean no going out with friends for a couple weeks or so. It all depends on the crime, the punishment needs to fit the crime. Not being able to leave your room sounds a bit easy to me, i mean isn't that where most teens like to be anyways. IF you like to watch a lot of tv and play a lot of video games and that is what would hurt the most, then yeah, I agree taking those things away is ok.

My idea of grounded is no TV, no video games, no phone, no friends, and no leaving the house unless it's with me. My kids are still young so they only get put in time out for a few minutes but when they get older my husband and I have already planned out what to do for discipline.

When I ground my son (5 years old),
No friends, no TV, Movies, Video Games, He has to play QUIETLY in his room for a minimum of 2 days. If he fights the punishment, 2 more days are added.

I have three levels of grounding, if the first doesn't get the mesage through, I move onto the next level.

I first take away a privilage (TV, phone, Video games, going to friends houses, etc.)

The next stage would be in the bedroom with no tv, etc. but still allowed to play with toys (I have young kids, sorry if this doesn't apply to you).

The last stage is on the bed, no toys, only come out for meals or to go to the bathroom. (this definately gets the point across as only one of kids have ever done this twice)

Depending on what I had done to get grounded I sometimes got tv etc taken off me or other times I was just sent to my room, not allowed to play out or speak to friends outside of school

I think that not being allowed to leave a room is a bit mean if it's long term. However, if it's for one night, then possibly. My idea of grounding is taking away what the kid likes the most, or limiting it as well. For example let's say that a child misbehaves, but relle enjoys his...nitnendo DS, then I would take it away for a week.

I wasn't ever grounded but my idea of it, from what I've heard, is that kids aren't allowed out of the house except for school, and that they may have a ban or limit on tv, games, etc.

Grounding should depend on the severity of the problem you had to initiate punishment in the first place. If it was something that they have just been told not to do I would go no friends for a day-something that could seriously injure them I would take away phone/tv/electronic/friend privelages

Couldn't leave your room? Depends on what the child does and the age. Isolation may not be a good thing. I take somethinga way that means something...the PC, cell phone, day with a friend, etc...
