The millimeter (MM) in lenses is called the focal length. It is the distance between the front of the image sensor (or film in a film camera) and the optical center of the lens when the lens is focused at infinity.

The higher the "mm" number the more magnification the lens has. So a 200mm lens will magnify an image more than a 50mm lens.

One is not necessarily better than another. It is just a measure of how much the lens magnifies an image. Whether you use a high or low mm lens depends on your shooting situation. Low mm lenses (also called wide angle lenses) will give you a wide field of view but will not magnify the picture very much.. A high mm lens (also called a telephoto) is like a telescope or binoculars--it will magnify the image a lot but not have a wide field of view.

Which one you should use use will depend on the subject you plan to take pictures or videos of and how far away you are from the subject.

It is the focal length. If you get a 50mm it would have the same field of view as a human eye. If you go smaller like 35mm it would magnify the picture like a microscope. If you went to 300 (telephoto) you would get a view of a little bit from far away and magnified to fill your screen like a telescope. If you went even higher you would see a tiny speck from very very far away (like a giant telescope).

mm as in 8mm stands for millimeters in negative or film size. the bigger the better because of picture quality - but how practical would it be?

i would visit a kodak site or vendor and look at what they have
