I agree white wouldn't be a good choice. Right now a lot of stores are having back to school sales so now is a great time to get a dress. I don't think color will be a problem and since she is 12 I am sure she will have an opinion about the dress.
I would suggest something pretty, but not too old for her so no spagetti straps or strapless. (Just MHO) Maybe a tank style or halter style, but even some of those are too grown up looking.
Here are some links for some dresses that are "in" now:

You should get something cute and simple. A dress that your daughter would be able to wear again to a party or something else in the future, so it won't be hanging in a closet and be forgotten. About the color: anything but white is good. You could ask your daughter what color she'd want (if you haven't already). About the type: just make sure it's modest and not too revealing - maybe something with 2-inches (or more) shoulders?

Well it depends if the wedding is during the morning like 9-11 then choose a simple dress with a soft color like-light blue, pearl pink, but if its in the afternoon from 12-3 then choose a vibrant color but if its in the late afternoon-night from3-12am then choose a red or black you can't go wrong with black or navy blue. When choosing a dress color make sure that it does not match the bridal party colors. NO WHITE!
For shoes have your daughter wear ballet flats.

Ask your future sister in law. White is not for brides only anymore. Maybe you ask your daughter what color she likes. A nice Summer dress would be nice, and she can wear it after the wedding to Church or any other little party. Definitely get your daughters input. With 12 years, girls know pretty much what they want. Please do not buy a dress without her. Also, she would have to try it on.

For a 12 yr old, I wouldn't get anything too 'old' looking, nor too sexy. If it's approaching soon, a nice sundress that isn't real low or clingy would be nice. Something like this:

or this is a nice style:

As for color, I'd steer clear of white or ivory, and personally I don't like anyone that young in solid black - they either come off as goth or that they are trying too hard to be 'older'. She's past the tiny pink flowers stage, but not quite in to the deep v-neck either. Let her go with you when shopping for her dress or else you are guaranteed to hear how much she hates it just because you picked it out, even if secretly she loves it.
Just remember one thing - you were a 12 year boy at one time, and you know what you were thinking when you saw the girls - do you want to fight off the boys already? LOL!! Then keep it simple.

Here are some nice dresses:

If worse comes to worse, ask the mother. Inform her that you don't want to push it off on her, but ask her where you should shop and what her size is. Bring your daughter to the store with you. Sears and JC Pennies have alot of nice things at lower prices. Point her in the right direction (make her bring a friend along two) and tell her to try on stuff.
Shopping and dresses are always fun for girls!

assuming that letting her pick out her own dress isn't an option, just pick something that's nice and simple, not too frilly. you're right to stay away from white, good for you! it doesn't have to match the bridal party at all, so you can pick whatever shade you want. pastels are nice.
