I like to see what other people think about religion.
I am an atheist but I am very interested in religion... I like studying all the different takes on deities, morals, myths, and so on. Plus, sometimes there are questions on here specifically for atheists. Furthermore, there are a lot of people on here that do not understand religion, and because I have studied every major world religion in depth, I try to educate people about other systems of belief, even if I do not subscribe to that belief myself.
I find it a meaningful and productive use of my time; it is not about searching for the truth about god, because I am 99.999% certain that it does not exist... the only thing that could make me 100% certain either way is to know how the universe formed. You guys do tend to fail in piety, though... it's lovely to see people treating each other with respect and dignity, which is what religion is supposed to be about. But all too often the piety is holier-than-thou and preachy, which just says "don't listen to me, I don't practice what I preach".

Spirituality may exist without religion, but religion may not exist without spirituality, because the whole concept of religion is faith and spirit. Atheists may be spiritual or have spiritual beliefs, but simply because one does not believe in God, does not mean they follow what other Atheists follow. Atheism simply means, "no God".
For the record though, I come to "Society and Culture", not just the R&S section. If there's a question I can clear up, based in religious principals, questioning Atheists, however, I'm there to answer it, but I don't single out only R&S questions.
However, without Atheists, half the Christians would have nothing to talk about! Half of these questions would be, "Do you agree?" and there would be no disagreeance, because there would be nobody to keep up the dispute, keeping things interesting. That's the thing with me.. the while debate is almost like a game, simply for entertainment. I don't take it to a personal level, because I know that what I believe is what I believe and there's nobody who can change that.
I just like to keep my argument skills sharp. ;]

The answer to your question is impossible to give.
**Note to my fellow Atheists: That doesn't make the question fictional.**
My reasoning is that we are all different. Some Atheists come here to genuinely help, some come to kick Christianity squarely in the k-nackers, some come to seek their true nature, while others come to sit and laugh at the ignorant.
I am Atheistic in my beliefs, although I do follow a religion. That leaves me in the middle, watching the bloodshed and eating popcorn, while occasionally heckling the troops on both sides.
Actually that's where I WAS. Now I'm running from end to end, trying to get everyone to drop their weapons and shake hands.
**Thanks for that! If I wanted a Bible in the back of my head I would have asked**

I come because I am interested. Because my life is impacted by religion. Because I find faith in the absence of evidence baffling at times. Because I find people have horrible stereotypes and hateful prejudices at times towards atheists and others. I will also admit sometimes when I feel overwhelmed and alienated by Bible quoting religionists who can't accept me I find the presence of the atheists on here comforting, a sort of community. I know that is probably a bit weird. I have to disappoint you though that I feel no tug to believe in a supernatural personal deity or the claims of the Bible or any other religious text.

Since when does spirituality have anything to do with religion? They are separate entities and only cross when the individual desires it.
To say we are truly searching is a bit condescending. Perhaps before saying such things you should remember that a decent amount of atheists were raised in the christian belief system and have no desire to return to it.

In my lifetime, I have acquired certain wisdom, and for the benefit of society wish to share it with others. So I answer questions on YQ&A on many subjects in which I have some expertise. There is no facet of human knowledge which is more in need of education than religion; the amount of waste of human effort and money on superstitious nonsense is staggering, and is beggaring society that can ill afford it -- not to mention the adverse effects of religion in places like Palestine, Kashmir, Iran, Chechnia, Bosnia, and elsewhere. (Did I mention Iraq?)

I'm not 100% atheist, but I come to watch and answer with what I've experienced.
There's much concern among nonbelivers about what the religious would like to do with governments and what not, I think that's also part of the attraction for me.

Does that mean that anyone who goes to the mythology & folklore section also believe in mythology and folklore? According to your logic, that would be the case, so re-think your question.
I come to R&S to hopefully get some theists to shake their heads and question their beliefs. Most theists blindly believe in something they have been brainwashed into believing from birth. It is the beliefs of their parents and the fears of their parents, whereas they have not thought for themselves. Theists should try it sometime.

Beats me brother but let us continue to share the gospel every opportunity we get, even in this forum, for in it we may never know who we are reaching......the Holy Spirit will do the rest.
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. Galatians chapter 6:9
And finally,
The word of God is quick , and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the hearts.
The Word works, lets just get it out there and God will do the pruning.
Keep up the good work for Him!

To learn other ideas we may not have thought of, to inform others of information they may not have...there are also theories put forth some individual may not have thought of before. 'Religion', by itself covers Buddhism, Mormonism, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism. 'Spirituality' covers all that, plus any other ideas/philosophies related to any form of religious thought.
What is it in the Christian Psyche that can not understand that? This is hardly an original thought/question.
Edit: To Donegal Rose-Coffee and donuts sound great!
