For first timers...
Appetizers - Samosa are triangular deep fried "pies". Nice two or three bite appetizer.
Breads - Naan is sort of like a pita bread
Entrees - all the curries I've tried I liked, Tikka, Tandori chicken...
The more I think about it.. It's all good. I've never had anything terrible. Even the vegetarian dishes are nice. If the restaurant has a buffet, a buffet is a nice way to go where you sample many dishes for a single price.

Generally you don't have pasta with Indian dishes. Chicken Tikka Masala is very nice, its eaten with rice (most dishes are, and even if they're not you would probably be able to ask for rice with them) Lamb Rogan Josh is also very nice if you prefer lamb Vindaloo is extremely spicy, so if you don't want really spicy food STAY AWAY from vindaloo you could ask for a naan bread with your meal which may help if you are finding your meal a bit spicy, or some mint sauce. For a really nice indian side, get a pakora or two all indian food is very nice though, you can't really go wrong! sometimes if you like the sound of something but it is a bit spicier than you were intending you can ask if they can make it a bit milder and they should be happy to do so.

I think Tandoori chicken is a safe way to go. The chicken is marinated in spices and then baked in an oven. Not too wild or exotic but very very good.
Samosas are really good too.
