When I'm down (and I mean for a few weeks) I turn to self improvement. Exercise, new hobby, learn som songs on the guitar, explore different employment opportunities, etc. Basically, I set myself up so that when I get my mind back on track and the emotional baggage has been stowed I am prepared to move ahead instead of having to make up for all the lost time while I was wallowing. It's importat to me to actively pursue the root of the depression as if I'm doing research for someone else. Then it's not as personal and I can start taking my own advice on how to deal with it.

My favorite trick: think back to all the things that have happened in life that seemed like the end of the world at the time but don't really matter any more and ask myself, "in 2, 5, 10 years will THIS even be a big deal?". If not, move on.

I still struggle with moderate to extreme depression and have been for the last 15 or so years and i'm 27. The best thing to do is have a close relationship with your doctor/pschychiatrist, take your meds if you go that route all the time, excercise a lot, and just stay busy.

Unfortunately, if you go to the doctor, they'll prescribe immediately.

When I went through a rough patch in my life, the doctor prescribed zoloft since I was not eating for a week by that time. I did not take it, although the next night, my friends took me to dinner and I started eating. I took each day at a time and see if I can eat more. I did.

I also immersed myself in my work and the gym. These helped a lot.

It's mind over matter. If there's a movie or music that just relaxes you and makes you smile then watch it and whenever you fell down think about it. I do that with Singin in the Rain. Nothing cheers me up more than that movie. Gene Kelly is just such a happy person that you can't help but be happy when you watch him happily and skillfully dance in the rain.

1 on 1 counseling with a professional, this was most effective for me since it was decided that I did not need to take anti-depressants. Depending on the person they may need counseling and anti-depressants or just one of the two.

Depression runs rampant in males in my family and I had to get Wellbutrin (low dose twice/day). I used to take Zoloft but it made me fat. With Wellbutrin, I'm slim and happy.

If you are clinically depressed, get the meds you need from a doctor. You deserve to be happy. Everyone does.

I know people say "pray" and "go to church". I tried that and I had great faith that God would take it from me. God can help in many ways and he helped me by getting me in to see a doctor!
