Although I've never used a PS or XBox before I am about to get a high spec LCD TV with surround sound and DVD player - we currently have cable/Virgin Media tele drive. I also want to get a PS3 to see what all the fuss is about!

My question is, what does a DVD Player have/do that a PS3 doesn't - and therefore do I need a DVD?

A "normal" DVD player doesn't do anything that the DVD player inside the PS3 doesn't do. You don't need to get a separate DVD player if you're getting a PS3.

The other advantage of getting the PS3 is that it will also play Blu-ray discs. You can get normal DVD players that will too, but they're extra expensive.

The only thing you might want to do is buy a DVD remote for the PS3. You CAN use the normal controller to navigate DVD menus and stuff, but the remote makes it a bit quicker!

Our first Dvd player still plays perfectly after 7 or so years and ps3s are built to last and more durable than a dvd player.

A PS3 does not connect to a DVD player. The PS3 plays DVD's itself. In other words, a PS3 is a DVD player. A PS2 can also play DVD's,

You can play your DVDs on the PS3. Alot of the new DVDs are going to be Blue ray which is better than high definition. I know you can play the new blue ray's on the PS3 also. Otherwise you need a whole new blue ray DVD player.

No, The PS3 is a Dvd player aswell as a blu-ray player.
You may want to buy the PS3 remote as it is much easier to use the Dvd and Blu-ray Player on the PS3

I own a PS3, and you do not need a DVD Player. The PS3 can play DVD's, Blu-Ray DVD's, PS1 games, PS2 games, and of course PS3 games.
