We have a stray cat we feed, however when ever she comes in the yard, our dog barks at her! Not in a threatening way but shes a large dog (lab mix) she just wants to be friends with the cat. Though bounds after her to great the cat! Tail wagging happily the whole time so I know she isn't trying to chase the cat off. How can I get my dog to calm down?

My dog is two almost three years old though we have only had her for a year. I know the basic training of sit and all that just needed a little extra help getting her a bit more calm.

We have a lab. One of the things we do is to allow her to approach cats. She's been scratched a few times, BUT she's much more cautious around cats now. Since your dog has a bit of Lab in her, there isn't much you can do to calm her down per se.

We took control of ours, and now if she gets too excited we make her sit, and she knows she has to look us in the eye and wait for a signal to get back up. This training will take massive amounts of time to sink in, but it works. First train your dog to sit. Most people can do this, but it gets complicated. After you tell your dog to sit, you will have to teach the dog that she can't get back up without your permission. If she gets up, push her on the butt and force her to sit back down. Do this as many times as needed until she stays down. Once she gets good at it, you can give yourselves some distance and work your way further and further back. Another good thing to try is to have someone else call her while you stand next to her to make sure she stays put. Hope this helps!

Have your dog separated from the cat for a while, through a barrier or something.
But allowing the cat to notice that the dog means it now harm. Gaining trust.

I have cats and there are stray cats, neighbor cats that wonder through my large yard, all day everyday.
One day I looked out and saw a stray cat just sitting looking through the chain link fence.
On the other side in my neighbors yard was her 11month old German mixed "Ginis".
Their he was happily barking his head off.................the cat somehow knew the dog could not or would not harm him although they were about a foot apart..............the cat was laughing at "Ginis"

I now see now, not just that cat, but all the neighborhood cats going through "Ginis's" yard, without a problem.

Familiarity breeds common aridity????
It'll take time.

It's a good thing your dog's temperament can tolerate cats. I had a trained police dog, that killed cats!....It was his up bringing prior to me having him.

Well, you gotta train it but also, is it a puppy? If it is, I'd give it some time to grow. And you also want to say "Quiet!" or something. The dog then will or should know that its doing something wrong. If the dog continues this, then try feeding this cat when the dog is not out.

This type of behavior is easily corrected by training. You haven't trained your dog? Why not? You should enroll yourself in a good dog obedience class and learn about dog behavior and how to teach your dog. That accomplished, it will simply be a matter of issuing the "leave it" command to the dog to leave the cat alone. And it will. You will have a better and more enjoyable pet and a safer one.
