I'm divorcing my husband and I are divoricing. He has a 7 year old daughter and we're really close. I'm moving to LA and she's moving with her dad to Washington State. Her Mom is already up there so she can contuniue having custody over my husband's daughter. I want to do something special since I won't see her for awhile. I leave in two weeks. Her mom says I can visit her whenever, since we're friends, but my husband isn't moving for about four months. Also, I got her Niki, the girl of the year American Girl doll and a lot of outfits and accesories. We live in Connecicut.

Since you like in Connecticut and she likes American Girl Dolls take her to the American Girl Place in New York City. Go on a train and leave sometime in the mroning. Then shop around, have lunch in the cafe, and see the play. She will love it. If she doesn't American Girl you could takes her into the city for the day. Walk around. Shop. Eat lunch (Mars2112 is great). She will love whatever you do but remember to focus on JUST HER!

Remember to e-mail and call her a lot! Talk it over with her father and ask if it would be ok if she came to LA every once and a while. He might make you pay for it but this will make her feel very special. Or, you could fly to Washington and get a hotel and have her stay in your hotel a night or two. Whatever you have to do right? Remember to tell her you are open to talk about anything. I'm sure she has a lot of feelings going on in her little head.

I have two grand daughters that are now 10. When they were 7 one of them came to spend a week. We had a ball. We used my Webcam to take fun pictures and printed them, then I bought her a small scrapbook and she put the pictures in and with colored pencils and special scissors decorated the pages. Then we painted each other's toe nails. She did her own fingernails, I had acrylics! Next, was our hair and make-up. I had full make-up, she had on just a little eye shadow and lip gloss. Then we got dressed and went to a dance with some of my friends.

She learned to Two Step that night and a large light went on over her head -- she had found her calling -- by the end of the evening she was dancing with adults (women and men) and my friend who played lead guitar in the band said she was the belle of the ball.

Plan the event yourself and keep secret from her each step until it happens - that keeps the excitement going. Provide little girls' jewlry, the cheap kind that she won't have to worry if it breaks. Get her a cute tattoo and help her put it where it won't show, let her put one on you, too -- maybe your shoulder blade! Don't forget fragrance.

You might consider a new movie she would like to see, a roller skating rink, or the trip to the mall already mentioned where you could get her a nifty see through shoulder bag and things to go in it. Be sure to include plenty of stationary in several designs with matching envelopes and lots of stamps; so, she can write to you and her friends she is leaving in Ct.

Of course she will also need pretty pens, some nail polish (in small bottles), lip gloss (in small pots), more kids' jewelry, candy and gum, and maybe even a poster or two.

What ever you decide to do I am sure that it will please her because the two of you will be spending time together. Just remember to make memories. Take a camera and have others take your pictures on that day, then you can each have a set!!

God bless you both.

You removed your other question before I could answer, but this might be encouraging to you:

I live in LA (Hollywood, more specifically). My company has about 4 positions open right now. They generally don't require experience, and it's a wonderful office to work in. If you're going to be looking for a job in LA and are interested, e-mail me (mrs_ezmirly@yahoo.com). Also, I can give you a general idea of where a few apartments are available for rent. (We just moved here and finished the apartment hunt ourselves. It's a huge pain if you don't know where to start). Seriously, shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you any information I have that you can use. I won't ask about where you end up working or living or anything, that's stalker-ish. lol. But really, you can make it in LA. We're a newlywed couple. I'm working full time and he's going to school. It's a bit tough, but it's do-able. Don't feel hopeless! If there's any way I can help, let me know, k? This has to be a hard transition for you, so if I can make it any easier, just shoot me an e-mail! {hugs} Good luck!

Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing: Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two (three - have her dad help) would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it! The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle. Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard. Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.

Honestly just stay in touch with her. Call her when you can and email her. Maybe buy her a journal, that is something special she can keep for a long time. I don't think buying her a bunch of stuff is the answer, show her through your actions, by calling etc. rather than buying her things. I have been though divorce and what you have gotten her is enough just don't loose contact with her. Mail is also a fun thing, kids never get letters and so on with the Internet, it makes them feel special and gives them something to look forward to.

The best gift is time with you. Let her help plan a day. Offer her some options but also ask if she has any ideas. At the end of the day give her some pretty stationary with her monogram on it and the envelopes already stamped. Tell her she can write you or draw you pictures.

WOW... how wonderful, well I would plan a "GIRLS" day... go shopping buy LOTS of junk and buy some special stationary so the two of you can keep in touch via writing... this will help her with her writing and spelling skills and it will be something special between the two of you and maybe even include a disposable camera so that she can send pictures of her new home, her new friends... etc.

Poor little thing, only seven and already two divorces? What's wrong with her Father??? I'd take her out to lunch or dinner, just the two of you and have a talk. Tell her how much you love her and will miss her and how none of this is her fault. Tell her she can come and visit or you will visit her. The gifts are nice too.

I would ask her what she would consider a "fun girl day" if you 2 could go and do anything together......what would it be. At 7, she knows what she likes and dislikes so let her lead the way on what you should plan to do. It will all depend on her and she will feel better and have more fun if she feels she is the planner.
