In order to get people to become an active part of a group you must convince them of a common enemy or threat. That is what religious leaders are doing. They can't pick something that would be common to their own membership or they would run everyone off, so they pick an evil that will not effect the average member to rally around and thus give the membership a common cause to get excited about.

I think the lack of tolerance of homosexuality is more of a testosterone thing than a religious thing. Regardless, what a lot of men believe in or don't, they usually don't accept homosexuals (proof=occasional exception for a man is unless they are 2 women). However the Love of God should provide tolerance for all. Considering the Love of God lives in us, only God know the heart of man.

Here's a religious type and it is very simple..God considers the act of homosexuality a sin,,,,an abomination...it is repugnant to him...as it is to most people...
But here is where you are in error..Christian, while not tolerating the "Act" of homosexuality,,,,do love the person that is caught in the web of Satan...and don't realize it..we not only tolerate, the person,,,we love him...as God told us to do...Hate the sin,,,not the sinner....

As someone else pointed out, you're expecting logic and reason from a group which follows doctrine that is inherently illogical and unreasonable. I suspect the intolerance to homosexuals stems more from fear (especially by men). There are men who are terrified by the idea they might be gay, and it causes them to lash out, verbally and physically.
As for homosexuals engaging in "disgusting behavior" (as I have heard it described), I've got news for the homophobes: A lot of the behaviors of us heterosexuals are pretty revolting, too, and not just in private.
At any rate, thanks for asking a well thought-out and reasonable question.

Do you ever hear these "Christian" types say they will no longer tolerate the genocide in Darfur? Yeah, me neither. I think their priorities are screwed up to say the least. They are also so unhappy in their own lives that they feel the need to control everyone else., rather it be homosexuals, atheists, people who dare read the new Harry Potter....

Things they don't tolerate---Homosexuality, sex before marriage, interracial marriage for some and women in positions of power.
Things they do tolerate----War, violence against others who don't believe as they do and treating whole segments of society as second class citizens.
To me it's intolerant of forms of love and tolerant of forms of violence or hate. Kind of says it all doesn't it?

Your premise is faulty. To tolerate someone who keeps their sex life private is fine with me. I resent that they are in the public school system trying to force my children to believe that homosexuality is normal. For your information that is called indoctrination and it starts in first grade.
When someone invades my space in life with what I deem to be objectionable enough to warrant opposition, and especially when it affects my children I will not sit idly by and do nothing.
Some homosexuals in cities across this country have gotten into the habit of having sex in public restrooms, and children have been exposed to that and it has been reported. I don't know if that is offensive to you or not, but as a responsible parent it is highly offensive to me apart from any religious teaching. Sex is a private thing and should be kept that way.
In addition, there is a law in congress that is being pushed as an addendum to another bill (trying to sneak it through) that gives homosexuals the right to speak out against anyone they want but takes that same right away from anyone who would speak against homosexuality with threats of fines and imprisonment. It won't matter whether you are religious or not. You will be fined or imprisoned if you say anything against them. That is a double standard and should not be tolerated by anyone who loves freedom in this country.
It isn't just a religious thing. Consider that if they get their law passed, then we will have to grant equal rights to anyone who has sex in any manner. We will have to recognize every form of sexual activity as normal or face fines and imprisonment.
That would include animal sex, pedophiles, transvestites, sado-masochists, kiddie porn and sex with children even as young as a couple of months old. It would be an explosion of filth and degradation such as this nation has never seen.
Further the free speech being taken from one citizen to favor another would begin a reign where the government could monitor and control everything that is said in public. Consider the ramifications of all this. Is this the world you want your children to grow up in? Is this the world you would choose for yourself?
EDIT: ONLY AN UNINFORMED, BIASED OR TOTALLY IGNORANT PERSON WOULD GIVE A THUMBS DOWN TO THIS - OR SOMEONE WHO WANTS THE GOVERNMENT TO CONTROL THEM INCLUDING THEIR THOUGHT LIFE.

What does it mean when religious types say that they will not tolerate homosexuality or that we as a society should not tolerate homosexuality?
It means that they will persist in their discrimination and bigotry and feel that they are justified in doing so. It means they have no qualms about curtailing the rights and equality of homosexuals, or in encouraging society to do so.

I agree with you. I am a Christian but its not my job to judge or tolerate any certain group of people. personally it doesn't effect my family of myself what others do in the bedroom. We need to let God do his job and we do ours by being loving towards our "neighbors" no matter what they do in their private lives.

They mean what they say. That's what is scary about it.
At first, I thought perhaps they were confusing the word "acceptance" with "tolerate". Now, I don't believe that.
I think they neither intend to accept, or tolerate, homosexuality. They will scream bloody murder about tolerance for themselves and their beliefs, but they blatantly tell you that they won't tolerate *certain* other things...and homosexuality is one of them.
It's sick.
