On Beach Patrol last night there was a girl and her 12 yr old brother dropped off by their Nana at a very popular Hawaiian beach. The girl sprained her ankle. I just don't see why you would do that. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, I'm just asking, would you ever do that?

Absolutely Not!!! Regardless of the maturity level of the 12 year old, it's a safety issue. Even if they live there, NO CHILDREN SHOULD BE ALONE IN PUBLIC. If a stranger tried to abduct one or both of them, it's just too easy a target. Especially when you've got a "tourist" area, with a lot of strangers. I guess Beach Patrol handled the situation, but what if they hadn't been there? An injured & defenseless child cannot protect herself nor her brother. Nana needs to get with today's times!

Not if I was a tourist. I have been going to Hawaii every second year since I was a little girl and have seen how it has changed over time and become less and less safe. I'd never leave my kids alone on any beach at that age.

If the children were residents of the island the family and children are probably very accustomed to this routine. Not saying it's particularly "right" but not altogether wrong either if the 12 year old is responsible. The children aren't technically "alone" on a busy beach either.

I guess it would depend upon whether or not by "last night" you mean it was dark, or just evening when lots of people are still around.

There's no way in hell I would ever drop my young kids off at a beach. That was very irresponsible of the Nana and I don't care how mature she might think the 12 year old is. They still need supervision...especially near an ocean and the tropical sun. She's lucky the girl only sprained an ankle.

Depends on the maturity of the children. I don't know if I could, but my parents never thought twice about letting me do things like that. In fact I was caring for my baby brothers 1 year and 2 years old by the time I was 10 while my mother was at work...so, I think that should be on a child by child basis.

My kids?
No way. My oldest is never going to be mature enough to be in charge of her sisters.

Someone else's kids?
Maybe. My Nephews would have been wonderful babysitters at age 10 & 11, they were very mature and had an abundance of common sense. On the other hand, my SIL babysat for me once and I found out that my 13 y/o niece was actually watching them (and certainly not mature enough... neither was my SIL, obviously).

I'm just wondering how the older brother handled it... was he just ignoring her, or did he get her help? Either way, in this day & age, I'd be aftraid to let my kids out of my sight on a public beach... you never know what kind of weirdos are hanging out there, as well.

Never! Not to mention the fact they are too young to be alone on a public beach with a lot of strangers, they are at the water.

A 13 yr old who "grew up on the water" drowned on a POND yesterday. This kids swam almost every day of his life and he drowned in a little pond.

I would let the 12 year old and her friends but i would still be supper close by maybe at a shop down the street or hiding in some tent!
but not with a 9 year old!
and it does depend on how they mature! i know some intelligent 10 year olds and i would trust her alone anywhere but detroit!~ lol

No way. Although when I was a kid, my parents probably would have, but we live in a different day and age with temptations and danger that we never had to deal with. I think that perhaps for very mature children, it's a possibility, but even mature children hurt themselves and want their parents. I think the parents were indeed irresponsible.

No way.Not without adult supervision that is just asking for trouble and also negligent on the part of the parent.

No, I think kids that age should have someone with them. Especially in a strange place.
