What kind of monks? I haven't heard anything about this.

If this is a serious question I'll give you a serious answer, if not then shame on you.
I've never heard of any order on Monk living in tunnels, although there is one order, Cestersian Monks, who live off the land. They eat what they grow, and live very humble.

Tunnel monks are fairly common in a lot of places.

Chipmonks do but their tunnels are usually referred to as burrows.
